About Dr. Audrienne Sammut

Dr Audrienne Sammut is a Consultant Neonatologist and Neurodevelopmental Paediatrician with specialist expertise in newborn medicine, preterm care, early neurodevelopment and autism assessment. She is a Consultant Neonatologist at University College London Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital, an Honorary Associate Professor in Neonatology at University College London, and a Consultant in Neonatology and Neurodevelopment at The Portland Hospital for Women and Children.

Dr Sammut cares for newborn babies, infants and young children with a range of neonatal and developmental needs. She has particular expertise in babies born prematurely, infants who have required neonatal intensive care, and children who need structured neurodevelopmental follow-up after birth. Her clinical approach focuses on early identification, timely intervention and clear support for families.

She leads the neonatal neurodevelopmental follow-up service at University College London Hospital and North Central London, ensuring that high-risk infants are identified, followed up appropriately and referred for early support where needed. She is also Co-lead of the Clinical Service Provision Group for the British Association for Neonatal Neurodevelopmental Follow-up, contributing to national work to improve standards of care after neonatal discharge.

Dr Sammut has completed ADOS-2 training and offers autism assessments for young children. Her autism assessment work is informed by her wider expertise in early child development, infant behaviour, developmental surveillance and family-centred care. She provides structured, careful assessments for children where there are concerns about social communication, interaction, play, behaviour or developmental differences.

She also has a particular interest in preterm brain protection, developmental care and improving outcomes for babies born early. She has led several quality improvement programmes in neonatal care, including the implementation of a preterm neuroprotection care bundle, which reduced the incidence of preterm intraventricular haemorrhage. Her broader work includes developmental care ward rounds, perinatal optimisation and parent-centred neonatal care.

Alongside her clinical work, Dr Sammut is actively involved in teaching, training and service development. She is a Newborn Life Support Medical Course Director, an educational supervisor, and course director for neurodevelopmental courses including Bayley developmental assessment, Prechtl General Movements Assessment and EiSMART training.

Patients and families value Dr Sammut’s calm, thorough and compassionate approach. She works closely with parents to explain complex neonatal and developmental issues clearly, provide practical guidance and ensure that each child receives care tailored to their individual needs.
