About Miss Annabel Shaw

Miss Annabel Shaw is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with expertise in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for bowel diseases, including colon and rectal cancers. She is dedicated to providing high-quality care and advancing the field of colorectal surgery through her clinical practice, teaching, and research.

After qualifying from St. George’s Hospital Medical School, Miss Shaw undertook higher surgical training in South West London and achieved the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in 2018. She was appointed as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Croydon University Hospital in 2022.

Miss Shaw established the Polyp MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) at Croydon University Hospital, which has since been integrated into the regular Colorectal Cancer MDT that she co-leads. She is also the Endoscopy Training Lead at the hospital, reflecting her strong commitment to teaching and training the next generation of surgeons.

Her clinical practice includes the management of both malignant and benign colorectal conditions. For benign conditions such as diverticular disease, haemorrhoids, anal fistula, anal abscesses, and anal fissures, she offers a range of treatments, including surgical options for haemorrhoids and anal fistulas, Botox for anal fissures, and outpatient non-operative management. She is a skilled endoscopist with JAG accreditation, performing advanced procedures such as colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (OGD). Miss Shaw is particularly experienced in advanced endoscopic techniques, including the removal of large bowel polyps (EMR/ESD) and transanal excision of early rectal cancers (TEM), a minimally invasive approach that preserves organ function.

In addition to her clinical work, Miss Shaw has conducted extensive research into the diagnosis and management of early colorectal cancer. She founded the multicentre PRESERVE trial, which aims to enhance the identification of early rectal cancers suitable for organ-preserving excision. Her research fellowship at Croydon University Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital laid the groundwork for her contributions to the field.

Miss Shaw regularly presents her work at national and international conferences, staying abreast of the latest advancements in colorectal surgery and ensuring her practice remains informed by the most current evidence. Her dedication to improving patient outcomes and advancing surgical techniques makes her a highly respected figure in her field.

Excellent. Although it started a little late, I learned all I needed to know, I informed her of my progress and we decided that no further action is required at this time.
