Miss Anna Gruener is a multi-award-winning Consultant Cataract Surgeon and Neuro-Ophthalmologist practising privately in Nottingham at Woodthorpe Hospital, The Park Hospital and Queen's Medical Centre.
From your first consultation to your final post-operative review, every appointment is with Miss Gruener herself. She also personally telephones every patient two days after surgery.
Cataract Surgery
Modern micro-incision, sutureless cataract surgery is performed through a tiny self-sealing incision and usually takes between ten and twenty minutes, although every eye is different and surgery takes as long as it needs. Patients return home the same day, and most are back to their usual routine within a few days.
Successful cataract surgery begins with the correct diagnosis. Not every reduction in vision is caused by cataract, and understanding why vision has deteriorated is just as important as performing the operation itself.
Alongside her private practice, Miss Gruener performs regular high-volume cataract surgery at Woodthorpe Hospital, with complication rates below the national benchmark. In her NHS practice at Queen's Medical Centre she also manages many of the complex cataracts that community eye services are unable to treat, including very advanced cataracts, eyes with previous surgery or injury, glaucoma, inflammatory eye disease and other conditions that make cataract surgery more technically demanding. That experience is brought directly into her private practice.
She also performs YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification ("secondary cataract"). Miss Gruener audits her surgical outcomes and is happy to discuss them with any patient who wishes.
Lens Options
There is no single "best" lens—only the lens that is best for your eyes and your lifestyle.
Miss Gruener offers the full range of modern intraocular lenses, including monofocal, toric, multifocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses. Every option is discussed objectively, with recommendations tailored to your eyes, your lifestyle and the visual outcome you hope to achieve.
Where a standard monofocal lens is genuinely the best choice, she will say so. Her aim is not simply to reduce dependence on glasses, but to achieve the safest and best possible long-term visual outcome.
Neuro-Ophthalmology
Miss Gruener diagnoses and manages neuro-ophthalmic conditions including optic neuritis and other optic nerve disorders, papilloedema, idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), unexplained visual loss, double vision, and pituitary and skull base conditions affecting the visual pathways.
She established and leads the Neuro-Ophthalmology Service at Nottingham University Hospitals and sits on the regional Skull Base Multidisciplinary Team alongside colleagues in Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Oncology and Endocrinology. She is regularly asked by ophthalmologists, neurologists and neurosurgeons across the UK to provide second and third opinions in particularly complex or undiagnosed cases.
Training and Background
Miss Gruener is triple-fellowship-trained in Glaucoma, Inflammatory Eye Disease (Uveitis) and Neuro-Ophthalmology.
This highly unusual combination of expertise is particularly valuable when cataract surgery is complicated by other eye or neurological disease, helping to identify conditions that may influence the outcome of surgery before the operation takes place.
She trained at Moorfields Eye Hospital, the Medical Eye Unit at St Thomas' Hospital, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Western Eye Hospital in London, before completing the prestigious T.F.C. Frost Fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, one of the world's leading neuro-ophthalmology centres.
Her research has been published in The Lancet, JAMA Ophthalmology, Neurology, Retina and the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, and she was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
A substantive Consultant at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust since 2017, she leads cataract surgery training at Queen's Medical Centre, helping to train the next generation of eye surgeons.
Her awards include the Ivor Levy Prize from the British Isles Neuro-Ophthalmology Club, a research award from the European Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, and the Nottingham University Hospitals Individual Clinical Ambulatory Care Award.
Appointments
A GP referral is not required, and most patients are offered an appointment within one week. Fixed-price cataract surgery packages are available at both Woodthorpe Hospital and The Park Hospital. Video and telephone consultations are also available where appropriate.
