About Dr Anna Basu

Dr Anna Basu is a highly dedicated Consultant Paediatric Neurologist and Clinical Senior Lecturer who specialises in the care of children with neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions. With a compassionate and patient-centred approach, Dr Basu focuses on early identification and early intervention for infants who are at risk of atypical neurodevelopmental outcomes. Her clinical work is deeply integrated with her commitment to improving the lives of young patients, particularly those affected by perinatal stroke and hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

In her clinical practice, Dr Basu has a particular interest in assessing and improving upper limb function in children with hemiplegia. She is actively involved in developing and evaluating innovative therapies, such as early speech and language therapy for very young children with motor disorders, and early therapy programmes for infants who have experienced a perinatal stroke. Her work also encompasses the study of motor system adaptation to early brain damage, the role of the mirror neuron system in motor learning, and the use of standing frames for children with cerebral palsy. Additionally, she supports holistic care models, including hospital-initiated social prescribing for children with neurodisabilities and their families.

Dr Basu completed her preclinical medical training in Cambridge before pursuing her clinical medical studies in Oxford, where she obtained her medical degree. She then undertook specialised postgraduate clinical training in paediatric neurology. Furthering her academic and clinical expertise, she was awarded a PhD in neuroscience in 2007, which focused on the assessment of cortical plasticity following early brain lesions. Dr Basu has also held prestigious clinical research fellowships, including a Clinical Trials Fellowship and a Career Development Fellowship. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
