Dr Alva Burke

Dr Alva Burke is a highly accomplished Consultant Neurologist who specialises in the field of neuro-ophthalmology. With a clinical focus on the complex intersection between the nervous system and vision, she provides expert care for patients experiencing neurological conditions that affect their sight. Her clinical interests encompass a wide range of disorders, including neuro-ophthalmological conditions, pituitary disorders, and central skull base issues. Dr Burke is dedicated to delivering reassuring, patient-centred care, utilising advanced diagnostic pathways to support her patients through their treatment journeys.

Before embarking on her medical career, Dr Burke trained in psychology and conducted genetics research at King's College London. She subsequently qualified in Medicine from the University of Cambridge in 2008. Her postgraduate training involved academic medicine rotations across Newcastle and London, followed by specialist neurology training in London and Melbourne, Australia. To further refine her expertise, she completed a prestigious fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology in 2019.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr Burke is deeply committed to medical education, research, and leadership. She served as a Research Editor for a prominent medical journal for several years alongside her specialty training. As a founding member and the current Vice-President of the UK Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, she plays a pivotal role in advancing the field nationally.
