About Mr Alexander Leggate

Mr Alexander Leggate is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, with specialist expertise in complex spinal surgery, neuro-oncology, and neurotrauma. He was appointed in 2020 following neurosurgical training in Manchester, which included a Royal College of Surgeons-approved Neuro-Oncology Fellowship. He also completed a complex spine and cranial fellowship at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.

Mr Leggate is the Neuro-Trauma Lead for the East Midlands and Head of Service for the Neurosurgery Department at Queen’s Medical Centre.

His clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of spinal pathology across the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive spinal surgery (and has introduced endoscopic spinal surgery in Nottingham) and spinal pain management, including image-guided injections.

In neuro-oncology, Mr Leggate performs complex cranial procedures, including awake craniotomies and surgeries using intra-operative neurophysiology, ultrasound, and 5-ALA fluorescence guidance. He also offers endoscopic-assisted cranial surgery.

He actively contributes to education and training as a member of the Neurosurgery Panel of Question Writers for the FRCS (Neurosurgery) examination. Mr Leggate has presented his research at national and international conferences, receiving multiple awards for his work.

Mr. Leggate consistently had a caring, professional and friendly approach. He gave me time and space, and really listened to what I was saying. He spoke clearly without overloading with lots of medical terms some of which most likely would have been unfamiliar. His surgical Skills have left me pain free.

I saw Mr Leggate as a follow up after nerve block injections in my back. He made me feel very relaxed and he listened carefully to how I was recovering. He went through in detail how I should start to wean off my painkillers, setting out a schedule for me over the next few weeks. This was extremely helpful and reassuring. He then dictated a letter confirming what we had discussed, checking my agreement. Mr Leggate asked what I wanted to do next; whether to make another appointment or to wait and see how things developed. Mr Leggate was extremely professional and efficient. His friendly manner put me at my ease and reassured me about my ongoing progress. Many thanks.

Reassured in that there was no damage to the final cord and that the thoracic fracture seemed to be stable, even if a bit ‘wedged’ . Good explanation of that and other anomalies. Recommendation for physiotherapy welcomed in order to explain cause and treatment of pain.

Good follow up appointment with a clear understanding of next steps. Alex has always shown care and compassion from my first appointment. He's provided me with reassurance that if things do flare up again then we can agree what happens next. Very nice guy who's able to explain the issues I have in an easy to understand manner.
