Dr Varinder Athwal

Dr Varinder Athwal is a highly accomplished Consultant Gastroenterologist and Consultant Hepatologist based in Manchester, United Kingdom. He specialises in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of a wide range of digestive and liver conditions. With a patient-centred approach, Dr Athwal is dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality care, helping individuals navigate complex gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders with reassurance and expertise.

In his clinical practice, Dr Athwal has a particular interest in liver health, with extensive expertise in liver fibrosis (scarring), chronic liver disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). He is also deeply involved in pioneering clinical research, serving as a Principal Investigator for major research programmes aimed at improving the early detection of liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). His work includes investigating cystic fibrosis-related liver disease and developing innovative diagnostic pathways to integrate primary and secondary care, ensuring patients receive timely and effective interventions.

Dr Athwal qualified with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree and completed his comprehensive specialist clinical training across the North West, the Midlands, and the United States. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Manchester in 2013, where his doctoral research focused on the pathobiology and diagnostic strategies of liver fibrosis. Dr Athwal is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and holds an academic appointment as a Clinical Senior Lecturer, contributing actively to the training of future medical professionals and the advancement of gastroenterological science.
