Professor Tony Bateman

Mr Tony Bateman is a Consultant Spine Surgeon specialising in the management of spinal conditions in adults. His experience includes degenerative, traumatic and metastatic disease of the spine, while the majority of his clinical practice involves injections and surgery for cervical and lumbar disc pathology and injections for back and neck pain. His clinical interests also include cervical spine disorders, spinal conditions in sport and osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures.

Mr Bateman provides both operative and non-operative spine care. His non-operative treatments include image-guided spinal injections, including nerve root blocks, facet joint injections and epidural injections. His surgical practice includes microdiscectomy, lumbar decompression and fusion, anterior cervical decompression and fusion, cervical disc replacement, posterior cervical decompression and fusion, and cement augmentation with kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty. He also performs minimally invasive spinal surgery.

Mr Bateman studied medicine and surgery at Imperial College School of Medicine, where he completed an intercalated Bachelor of Science and carried out research into spinal kinematics during rowing with the British Rowing team. He completed basic surgical training in London followed by higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the South East Thames training rotation. He then undertook a one-year advanced spine surgery fellowship at Frimley Park Hospital, followed by a further complex spine surgery fellowship at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre through the University of Toronto. During this period, he was awarded the Soli Lam Spine Fellowship from the British Orthopaedic Association and a Zimmer International Fellowship Award.

He also holds a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine and has provided medical services at the World Rowing Championships, the London 2012 Olympic Games and national and international motorsport events, including Formula 1. Mr Bateman was also appointed Chief Medical Officer for Brands Hatch Racing Circuit.

Research and surgical education are additional areas of his professional work. Mr Bateman is involved in spine research and has links with Nottingham Trent University, the University of Derby and the University of Nottingham. He has served as local Principal Investigator for several clinical trials, including DRAFFT2, WAX, ASPIRE-SSI, UCES, POISE and PolyFix DCM. He is a recognised surgical trainer for orthopaedic and neurosurgical higher surgical trainees, delivers regional teaching to medical students and surgical trainees, and regularly directs and teaches on Royal College of Surgeons educational courses for surgeons in training.

Mr Bateman remains an Honorary Consultant Spine Surgeon at Royal Derby Spinal Centre and an active member of its multidisciplinary team. He was also the Professional Practice Representative for the British Association of Spine Surgeons and is an executive committee member of the Society for Back Pain Research.
