Dr Stephen Sawcer

Dr Stephen Sawcer is a dedicated Consultant Neurologist who provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, clinical consultations, and ongoing management for individuals experiencing a wide array of neurological conditions. With a primary clinical focus on neuroinflammatory disorders, he specialises particularly in the holistic care of patients living with multiple sclerosis. Dr Sawcer combines rigorous clinical expertise with an empathetic, patient-centred approach, ensuring that individuals receive clear diagnostic insights and reassuring support tailored to their personal health needs.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Sawcer serves as a Professor of Neurological Genetics. His academic research is internationally recognised, focusing predominantly on uncovering the genetic variations that influence susceptibility, progression, and treatment responses in multiple sclerosis and related neuroimmunological disorders. By integrating cutting-edge genomic research into his clinical perspective, Dr Sawcer aims to advance the understanding of complex neurological conditions and contribute to the development of more effective, personalised therapeutic strategies.

Dr Sawcer commenced his academic training by completing a Bachelor of Science in Physics at Liverpool University before obtaining his medical degree (MB ChB) from Birmingham University. He subsequently undertook specialist Neurology training across Manchester and Cambridge, alongside completing a PhD at the University of Cambridge. Dr Sawcer qualified as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1991 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2010. He maintains active professional affiliations with key scientific bodies, including the International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium and the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium.
