Dr Shamima Rahman

Dr Shamima Rahman is an esteemed Consultant Paediatrician and Professor of Paediatric Metabolic Medicine who dedicates her clinical practice to the care of infants, children, and young adults facing complex metabolic conditions. Recognising the profound impact that rare medical diagnoses can have on families, Dr Rahman approaches each young patient with empathy, clarity, and reassurance. Her work focuses on delivering comprehensive, specialist care tailored to the individual needs of children affected by rare inborn errors of metabolism and primary mitochondrial disorders.

In her clinical practice, Dr Rahman specialises in the diagnosis, evaluation, and holistic management of rare metabolic conditions, neurometabolic disorders, and disorders of vitamin metabolism. Working as part of multidisciplinary clinical teams, she oversees thorough diagnostic evaluations and coordinates integrated management strategies for children with complex multisystem conditions. Her clinical focus encompasses identifying underlying genetic causes and implementing advanced pharmacological and therapeutic interventions aimed at improving long-term health outcomes and quality of life for young patients and their families.

Dr Rahman completed her undergraduate medical degree at the University of Oxford, where she earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1988, along with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours. She subsequently undertook postgraduate specialist training in paediatric metabolic medicine and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in molecular medicine in 2002. Dr Rahman is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. She holds professional memberships with the British Medical Association, the Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism, and the British Inherited Metabolic Disease Group.
