Professor Robert Middleton studied medicine at Cambridge University. Following this, they moved to Guys Hospital in London to complete their medical training. Professor Middleton trained as a surgeon at a number of teaching hospitals, including Kings College Hospital, University College Hospital and The Middlesex Hospital. Their orthopaedic surgical training took place at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore, which they completed as a Senior Registrar at the Middlesex Hospital London.
Professor Middleton undertook further training internationally, receiving an AO Trauma Fellowship to train and work in Fribourg, Switzerland. They were then awarded a travelling fellowship from both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Kings Fund London. This enabled them to receive sub-specialist training in complex hip surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia.
Professor Middleton has held research posts at the University of Adelaide, Australia as a visiting clinical lecturer.
Professor Middleton holds the following qualifications: BA (Hons) in Medicine (University of Cambridge, 1986); MB Bchir in Surgery (University of Cambridge, 1989); FRCS in Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (1993); FRCS (Orth) in Orthopaedics (Royal College of Surgeons of England, 1996); CCST in Specialist training in trauma & Orthopaedic surgery (1999).
