About Professor Steven Brown

Professor Steven Brown is a respected and very experienced Consultant General Surgeon specialising in colon, rectal and anal problems.

He learnt colonoscopy using Japanese techniques of minimal discomfort and performs most procedures without the need for sedation.

Whilst serving as a professor of surgery at University of Sheffield, he has established a leading regional centre for the treatment of faecal incontinence and constipation introducing many new techniques including sacral nerve stimulation, laparoscopic ventral rectopexy and repair for obstetric injury. He is also registered with the British Haemorrhoid Centre as a regional expert in the HALO procedure and am involved in training other consultants.

Professor Brown also has an interest in inflammatory bowel disease and runs joint clinics and ward rounds with gastroenterologists, regularly offering minimal access surgery for Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. I carry out pouch procedures- offering a procedure that avoids the need for a stoma.

He is a skilled laparoscopic surgeon, performing bowel cancer procedures that allow enhanced recovery and rapid return to normal activities for his patients. He also offers the best treatments available for anal fissures and fistulas including anal fistula plugs, Botox injection, pilonidal surgery, and advancement flaps - all with same-day discharge.

Professor Brown wrote the national guidelines for management of fistulas in Crohn's as well as for the treatment of inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Prof Brown was very informative and helpful and his care was excellent as was the rest of the team on the day. unfortunately the communication on the pre op telephone call from Claremont was very poor I was given the wrong information the day before my procedure as I was assured it would be a local anaesthetic even though at my consultation I was told it would more than likely be general I was advised I could eat and drink as normal even when I questioned this I was clearly told that it would be a local. When I arrived at Claremont the following day my procedure had to be delayed as I had not fasted for 6 hours which was very disappointing such a simple mix up with communication resulting in a longer than necessary stay wasting time for everyone.

Thank you for your thorough feedback, and I am pleased that you found my care and that of the wider team satisfactory. I am sorry, however, that you were given incorrect information during the pre-operative telephone call, which resulted in your procedure being delayed and your stay being longer than necessary. I have raised the issues you describe with Claremont, as these aspects of the process are managed by the hospital, and they have assured me that they will look into what went wrong. I would also encourage you to provide this feedback directly to Claremont, as this will allow them to investigate the specific communication problems and ensure that appropriate lessons are learned. Thank you again for taking the time to provide the feedback.

Professor Brown was excellent in all respects, very clear explanation pre and post surgery. Claremont Hospital administration was lacking, very poor lines of communication, but the professor’s professionalism easily made up for Claremont’s shortcomings.

Thank you very much for your kind feedback. I am delighted that you were happy with the care you received and that you found the explanations before and after surgery clear and helpful. I am sorry that you experienced difficulties with the hospital’s administration and communication. These are issues that sit with Claremont rather than with my clinical care, but I have passed your comments on to the hospital as this feedback is important in helping them improve the patient experience. I would also encourage you to feed back directly to them so that they can investigate specifically the issues that occurred. Thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback.
