About Professor Olaf Wendler
Professor Olaf Wendler is working part-time as Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at King's College Hospital and has his private practice at Cleveland Clinic London. There he is the Chair of the Heart, Vascular ad Thoracic Institute. Together with his colleagues he has created a team of internationally reknowned cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, who are capable to treat all areas of adult cardiovascular disease.
After he graduated from Hamburg Medical School in 1990, Professor Wendler worked as a staff surgeon at the Heart Centre Leipzig and the University Hospital Saarland, Germany. During this tenure he performed around 2,500 cardiac operations.
In August 2004, Professor Wendler was appointed Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon to King's College Hospital, acting as Clinical Director between 2005 and 2012. He was promoted to Professor of Cardiac Surgery at King's College London in June 2012.
Professor Wendler has a specialist interest in arterial coronary bypass surgery, heart valve and aortic root repair, minimally-invasive heart surgery, thoracic aortic surgery and repeat and complex cardiac operations. In 2007 he performed the first transapical transcatheter heart valve implantation in the UK and subsequently the first implantation in a failing aortic prosthesis (2008) and failing mitral prosthesis (2011).
Professor Wendler has lead on numerous trials and is co-author of the most recent European Guidelines on Coronary Revascularisation and Treatment of Valvular Heart Disease.
