Professor O'Donnell is a highly accomplished vascular surgeon with extensive training and experience in the field. He graduated from the Queen's University of Belfast with a Doctorate of Medicine and completed his surgical training as a Specialist Registrar on the Northern Ireland Surgical Training Rotation. He also completed a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, where he developed an interest in medical simulation and military trauma education.
Professor O'Donnell has over 100 publications in PubMed Indexed Peer-Reviewed journals, over 100 published abstracts, and more than 250 international and national presentations. He is also a regular reviewer for over 20 medical journals and a visiting professor at Ulster University. Additionally, he is a Faculty Tutor and Course Director for the Royal College of Surgeons Basic Surgical Skills and START courses.
His areas of expertise include varicose veins, carotid surgery for prevention of stroke, open and endovascular aortic aneurysm surgery, minimally invasive arterial and venous surgery, distal bypass surgery for complex circulatory problems, diabetic foot disease salvage, endovenous (catheter) treatment of varicose veins under local anaesthetic, sclerotherapy for varicose veins, vascular trauma, and healthcare quality improvement. He provides office consultations and treatment for these conditions at several private hospitals, including the Kingsbridge Private Hospital, North West Independent Hospital, Ulster Independent Clinic, and the Newry Clinic. He also has clinical privileges at the Royal Victoria, Belfast City, and Altnagelvin Hospitals.
