Professor Basky Thilaganathan

Professor Basky Thilaganathan is a highly distinguished Consultant Obstetrician and Professor of Foetal Medicine who provides specialised care in high-risk obstetrics and maternal-foetal health. His clinical practice focuses on managing complex pregnancy conditions, safeguarding both maternal well-being and unborn child development. Recognised for his expert approach to high-risk pregnancies, he offers reassuring, patient-centred care tailored to the individual needs of expecting mothers.

Professor Thilaganathan completed his undergraduate medical education at King's College London, earning a Bachelor of Science in Genetic Engineering in 1985 and qualifying with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1988. He subsequently undertook specialist postgraduate training at King's College London and St Bartholomew's Hospital, completing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Foetal Medicine in 1996. He became a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) in 1995 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRCOG) in 2007. Additionally, he holds an Honorary Doctorate from Uppsala University and serves as a Council Member for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

With extensive expertise in prenatal diagnosis and foetal ultrasound, Professor Thilaganathan has made significant clinical advancements in the management of pre-eclampsia, placental dysfunction, and foetal growth restriction. He played a pivotal role in establishing non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) services within the UK public health system to enable safe, early screening for chromosomal conditions. Furthermore, he is dedicated to improving maternity outcomes on a national level, leading clinical initiatives to standardise high-quality antenatal care and reduce pregnancy complications.
