About

Professor Aarsland Dag is the Head of the Department of Old Age Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London, and is the Lead Consultant Psychiatrist at the Mental Health for Older Adults for the South London & Maudsley NHS Health Trust, within the Parkinson Spectrum Memory Clinic.

His research covers a wide range of topics within the fields of psychiatry and neuropsychiatry, with a particular speciality on Dementia, Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Parkinson's disease. He has also contributed to developing diagnostic criteria in the International Task Forces and is currently researching mechanisms between depression and cognitive impairment in older people, in order to find novel therapeutic approaches.

Professor Dag graduated from the Universities in Bochum (Germany) and Oslo (Norway), he then completed specialist training as a psychiatrist and moved into the field of geriatric psychiatry. He established and is the lead for the Section of geriatric psychiatry and the Centre for Age-Related Diseases at Stavanger University Hospital. This covers a range of psychiatric conditions in older people. He also completed a PhD and was appointed the title Professor, followed by Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at the University of Bergen (Norway). He was also Professor at the University of Oslo (Norway) and then Professor of Clinical Dementia research at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm (Sweden). He worked in Sweden for five years before moving to London to work for Dementech Neurosciences.

Researchers are currently working on developing biomarker research particularly on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and increasing the portfolio of clinical trials. Professor Dag was actively involved in this research and this lead to the licencing of rivastigmine to treat Parkinsonian dementia. Furthermore, he has published numerous scientific articles and books and has presented in several psychiatric and neurological international conferences.
