About Dr Panicos Shangaris
If you are facing a high-risk or complex pregnancy, have received an unexpected scan result, or want specialist support before or during pregnancy, I am here to help. I am a Consultant Obstetrician and Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) subspecialist with over 20 years of clinical experience, and I hold a Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship and a PhD in Fetal Medicine.
High-Risk and Complex Pregnancies
I specialise in managing pregnancies where there is significant medical complexity, including pre-existing conditions, multiple pregnancy, previous pregnancy loss, or an unexpected diagnosis during pregnancy. My aim is to give you clear information, a plan you understand, and the specialist oversight your pregnancy needs.
Fetal Diagnostics and Prenatal Testing
I offer the full range of specialist fetal diagnostic services, including NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing), amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), detailed anomaly scanning, and expert counselling around abnormal findings. My practice is built on giving families the clearest possible picture of their baby's health and the options available to them.
Preterm Birth Prevention
Preventing preterm birth is an area in which I have both deep clinical experience and active research involvement. I lead work in cervical length surveillance, progesterone therapy, and cervical cerclage and I apply the latest evidence directly to individual patient care. If you have had a previous preterm birth or late miscarriage, I can assess your risk and design a personalised prevention strategy.
Preconception Counselling
I offer preconception counselling for women planning a pregnancy, particularly those preparing for IVF, those with a history of pregnancy complications, or those with medical conditions that may affect pregnancy. A comprehensive consultation at this stage allows us to identify risks, arrange any relevant investigations, and give you the best possible start.
Academic and Research Leadership
I hold a Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship, one of the most prestigious research awards in UK medicine, and a PhD in Fetal Medicine from King's College London. I also hold an MSc with Distinction in Prenatal Genetics and Fetal Medicine from UCL, and I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. My research background directly informs my clinical practice, ensuring my patients benefit from the most current evidence.
