Dr Niranjanan Nirmalananthan

Dr Niranjanan Nirmalananthan is a highly regarded Consultant Neurologist and National Clinical Director for Neurology who provides comprehensive, patient-centred care for individuals experiencing a wide range of neurological conditions. In addition to his direct clinical work, he serves as an Honorary Senior Lecturer and holds key national leadership roles focused on improving healthcare delivery and standards for adult neurology patients across the country. His approach combines clinical precision with clear, empathetic communication to support patients throughout their diagnostic and treatment pathway.

His clinical focus spans general neurology with specialised interest in neuromuscular disorders, neurogenetics, and complex headache and facial pain syndromes. Dr Nirmalananthan evaluates and manages conditions such as episodic and chronic migraine, cluster headache, medication-overuse headache, post-traumatic headache, and secondary headache disorders. To deliver tailored therapeutic relief, he provides advanced treatment options including Botulinum toxin therapy for chronic migraine, greater occipital and cranial nerve blocks, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibody therapies, and non-invasive neurostimulation techniques.

Dr Nirmalananthan began his academic journey by earning a degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University before completing his medical degree at King's College London. He went on to achieve a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in cellular and molecular neuroscience from the Institute of Neurology at University College London, followed by higher specialist clinical training in neurology at premier teaching hospitals in London. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and maintains active memberships with professional bodies including the Association of British Neurologists, the British Society for Clinical Neurophysiology, the British Peripheral Nerve Society, the British Myology Society, the British Association for the Study of Headache, and the International Headache Society.
