About Mr Nick Ohly

Mr Nick Ohly is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising exclusively in hip and knee replacement surgery, with sub-specialist interests in robotic assisted surgery, and complex and revision knee replacement. He has performed over 3000 joint replacements and he is the highest volume surgeon using the Mako robotic system in Scotland (more than 1000 cases to date). He treats patients from across the country, both in the NHS and in his private practice at Nuffield Health Glasgow Hospital. He is invited to teach internationally on advanced techniques in hip and knee replacement, and he is also active in clinical research, with papers regularly published in the orthopaedic literature.

Mr Ohly completed his medical degree at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2001 and he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He completed his specialist orthopaedic training in Edinburgh, followed by a Fellowship in Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. In 2014 he was appointed to an NHS consultant post at the Golden Jubilee University National Hospital, where his practice is focused exclusively on hip and knee replacements, and he supervises an international robotic & revision arthroplasty fellowship. He has been consulting privately at Nuffield Health since 2019.

He is passionate about providing high quality patient specific care, with new patient appointments scheduled for 30 minutes to allow sufficient time for a comprehensive discussion about any proposed treatment, and he always makes himself available for any questions before and after surgery.

Mr Ohly is a truly remarkable surgeon who puts his patients' needs and concerns first. From my first consultation, I felt that I was being listened to by someone who genuinely cared about my concerns and wanted the best possible outcome for me. He was always approachable, took the time to answer my questions and responded promptly to emails, which helped me feel prepared and supported throughout the entire process. After living with hip dysplasia, impingement and osteoarthritis for many years, I had almost forgotten what it felt like to move without pain. Ten weeks after surgery, I am stronger every week and have returned to activities that had become increasingly difficult before my hip replacement. I am extremely grateful for the care I received from Mr Ohly and his team, and for the outcome of my surgery. I would not hesitate to recommend him to others considering hip replacement surgery.

Mr Ohly was very courteous on every occasion and explained everything very clearly and succinctly. The operation was a complete success and I recovered well and was home within 48 hours . I just have a very neat scar, which did not even require stitches to be removed and gave me no problems at all . I attended the physiotherapist and did all the exercises he recommended . Now 14 weeks later , at the age of 81 , I am back playing golf . Thanks to the skill of Nick Ohly and his team .

My experience of having a hip replacement carried out by Mr Nick Ohly at The Glasgow Nuffield Hospital was entirely positive. During my initial consultation with him he fully explained the procedure, provided the options for surgery and indicated the expected approximate date on which he could carry out the operation. Everything he told me at that time and his manner generally, gave me full confidence in him and once I had elected to go with him everything went exactly as he had said it should. My short, post-op stay in hospital was good and all the staff there were extremely pleasant and helpful. Mr Ohly visited me the morning after surgery to ensure all was well. Following my return home, my recovery was swift and I always felt that the Nuffield staff were very helpful during any follow-up nurse, or physio appointments. I only have positives to take away from the experience and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mr Nick Ohly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mr Ohly has a very pleasant manner and put me totally at ease when I first met him. Totally professional. He made sure that I understood what the operation would entail (total hip replacement). He explained how I would feel after the operation, which I found very helpful. Mr Ohly invited me to ask any questions I might have. It was reassuring to have him visit me prior to going to theatre. He came to see me after the operation and on the day I left. He is a very caring surgeon and I had total trust in him.
