Professor Downes is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Oxford Eye Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Professor of Ophthalmology at the Nuffield Laboratory of Clinical Ophthalmology, Nuffield Department of Clinical Neuroscience. She is a visiting Professor to the Pantheo Clinic in Limassol, Cyprus. Prof Downes is the director of the Oxford Kellogg Vision Centre, Kellogg College, Oxford.
Professor Downes' research areas are primarily focused on inherited retinal degeneration and phenotype genotype correlation. Other areas include the treatment of age-related macular degeneration and central serous chorioretinopathy and sleep studies in ocular disease. Professor Downes has collaborative links worldwide in these fields with research and training.
Professor Downes qualified from the University of Bristol and completed her research MD and Medical Retinal Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology, UCL. Professor Downes is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
