Miss Niamh Stone

Miss Niamh Stone is a highly experienced and compassionate Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at The Oxford Eye Hospital, with more than 22 years of experience in ophthalmology. She is known for her approachable manner and patient-centred care. She takes time to understand each patient’s concerns and explain their diagnosis and treatment clearly.

After obtaining her MRCP (Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians), Miss Stone specialised in ophthalmology. She completed her ophthalmic training in Edinburgh, Oxford and at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, gaining extensive experience in medical and surgical eye care. Her particular interests include cataract surgery, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusions, age-related macular degeneration and laser treatments.

Miss Stone is currently Medical Governance Lead at The Oxford Eye Hospital (OEH) helping to maintain high standards of clinical care and ensure patient safety is upheld.

She previously led the Vascular Medical Retina Service at OEH and was also failsafe lead ensuring patients received safe and timely care..

She has supported clinical trials at the Oxford Eye Hospital and  has been involved in various research and quality improvement projects, including important work on "Towards greener intravitreal injections" at the Oxford Eye Hospital, with a focus on sustainable healthcare and innovation.

Beyond her clinical practice, Miss Stone is committed to medical education and professional leadership within the ophthalmic community

Miss Stone is an International Examiner and serves on the Duke-Elder and Part 1 FRCOphth examination committees, assessing doctors training in ophthalmology.

As a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Surgical Skills Faculty, she contributes to and leads cataract surgery teaching courses, supporting high standards of surgical practice and patient safety. She has been involved in delivering the MSc in Primary Care Ophthalmology at the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons since its inception and she is keen to share her expertise with the wider community.

Miss Stone is also an Educational Supervisor for The University of Oxford undergraduate medical students and Foundation Programme doctors, supporting doctors at the early stages of their careers.

Miss Stone assesses and treats a wide range of eye conditions, including:

Cataracts and cataract surgery - clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which can cause blurred or misty vision

YAG laser capsulotomy — a laser treatment used to improve vision when the membrane behind a lens implant becomes cloudy after cataract surgery

Age-related macular degeneration — few a condition affecting the macula, the part of the retina responsible for detailed central vision

Diabetic retinopathy and diabetic maculopathy — changes to the retina or macula caused by diabetes, which can affect vision if left untreated

Retinal vein and artery occlusions  — blockages in the blood vessels supplying or draining the retina, which may cause sudden or gradual changes in vision

Posterior vitreous detachment, flashes and floaters — common changes in the gel inside the eye
