About

Mr Niteen Tapuria is an experienced Consultant General Surgeon specialising in Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HBP) surgery which is surgery of the liver, pancreas and bile system. He has performed more than 600 laparoscopic cholecystectomies for gallstones and is experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as bile duct stones , pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancer and diseases of the liver as well as Spleen. However, he is also has a special interest in minimally invasive and open techniques for groin hernia repair and abdominal wall hernia as well . More recently he has developed skills in Robotic surgery and Virtual reality surgery .

Graduating with a medical degree from the University of Delhi in 1992, followed by MS in General Surgery from Delhi University, he moved to the UK and began his specialist training here in King’s College Hospital, London . His first job as an HBP Specialist Registrar began in the Royal Free and University College London Hospitals in 2011. Since then, he has worked across London at Kings College Hospital as well as The Royal Marsden Hospital before taking up a HPB Consultant post in early 2017 in the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital NHS Trust. Additionally, he completed a fellowship in HBP surgery and liver transplantation at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham and Robotics in Italy.

His current NHS base is at Milton Keynes University Hospital.

Mr Tapuria takes a particular interest in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and robotics. He is a member of Great Britain Hepatobiliary Association and Association of Surgeons of Great Britain.

Awards

Mr Tapuria is a recipent of the European Society of Surgical Oncology Fellowship and Peter Samuel Grant (Royal Free Trust) .

Academic interests

Mr Tapuria is currently the Principal investigator at MKUH for trials looking at role of MRCP in gallstones and drug modulation in pancreatitis. He was awarded an MD in 2008 from the University College of London for his research work which demonstrated the protective role of preconditioning on organs by regulation of endothelial function. He has published in peer reviewed journals and presented at International conferences. He is a reviewer for the British Journal of Surgery and other journals by invitation.

Laparoscopic (Keyhole) gallbladder and biliary surgery

I have a special interest in diseases of the gallbladder such as gallstones and gallbladder dyskinesia and have a high volume practice in managing these conditions with experience in managing acute gallstone disease. I also manage bile duct stones and pancreatic pseudocysts laparoscopically.

Laparoscopic (Keyhole ) Groin hernia surgery

All patients with groin hernia regardless of symptoms should be offered a consultation as the long term outcome of early operation is better than wait and watch policy even in asymptomatic hernia according to recently published international guidelines. I have a special interest in performing laparoscopic groin hernia operations. I have been to Belgium to train and learn new approaches in robotic surgery in groin hernia .

Abdominal wall hernia and complex abdominal wall reconstruction ( Laparoscopic/Open)

I adopt a multidisciplinary team approach to complex abdominal wall reconstruction including both open and minimally invasive techniques. Abdominal wall hernia result in poor quality of life due to poor abdominal wall function and surgical treatment can offer a significant improvement in quality of life. I offer Laparoscopic and open approaches to management of abdominal wall hernia, incisional hernia, umbilical and paraumbilical hernia. I have learnt new approaches in robotic surgery in abdominal wall hernia repair and reconstruction at specialist centres in Belgium .

Acute Surgery (Laparoscopic/Open)

I have a high volume practice im emergency surgery and perform laparoscopic appendicectomy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy , diagnostic laparoscopy for abdominal pain, small bowel resection, colectomy, laparoscopic duodenal perforated ulcer repair

Explanation

I found my experience as a patient of Dr Tapuria’s to be very smooth sailing. I had little knowledge of my procedure to start with he made me feel totally at ease from the first consultation, answering every question i had. On the day of surgery i felt anxious however, Dr tapuria put my mind at ease prior to the operation and was very attentive through out my aftercare. Overall i would highly recommend Dr tapuria not only for his knowledge but also for his manner.

Explanation

I found Mr Tapuria exceptionally sympathetic, efficient and knowledgeable. He swiftly diagnosed the problem, sent me for the relevant scan and then made effort to do the follow up whereupon he explained everything about the results. He is also a very patient listener as I asked a lot of questions and he answered them all. He also made good and useful suggestions of self help treatments. The important thing for any patient is to feel reassured and in good hands. That alone is a huge help, but coupled with the right diagnosis, and meds prescribed, I would say I had a great experience and that is such a relief. Mr T is also very approachable and doesnt intimidate the patient. This is also key. Thanks Mr T! I will follow your advice to the letter.
