    About

Mr. Mark Phillips is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with many years of experience in adult hand and wrist surgery, trauma surgery, elbow conditions, and complex injury surgery. He has a particular interest in performance-related conditions in musicians and sees private patients at the London Bridge Hospital.

Mr. Phillips earned his primary medical qualification in Cambridge in 1989 and after basic surgical training and a research post at the Royal Free Hospital, he completed specialist training in Orthopaedics & Trauma on the King’s College Hospital rotation. After higher surgical training, he completed two fellowships: one in hand surgery in the Plastic Surgical Department at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, and a second in fracture reconstruction in the University of Pisa, Italy.

After 14 years as an NHS Consultant, the last 12 of which at King’s College Hospital, he now exclusively consults privately. Mr. Phillips is an enthusiastic teacher and has taught at all levels to the public, allied healthcare professionals, medical students, and other consultants. As well as convening courses related to complex fracture management, he has been invited to be a faculty member at meetings around the UK and across Europe.

His main area of academic interest at King's was related to the management of bone defects created by high-energy trauma and the use of technology such as growth factors to enhance healing.

It is important that HCA is transparent about our relationship with those doctors who provide us with clinical guidance on delivering the best possible care to patients and operating our hospitals safely and efficiently. We set out here some of the ways in which we work together and the amount we pay this doctor for such services.

Good communication, listened to me, explained procedure fully. I didn’t feel at all anxious. Waited, when I requested him to, while I gathered my thoughts after a painful injection before I had my second injection. I felt I could trust him.

I can't recommend Mark highly enough. He really listened to me and took on board what I said, and made sure I'd understood my options and what was happening medically. I never felt rushed, and he did a wonderful job reassuring me prior to surgery (which he also did a wonderful job of!).

Mark was fantastic from the first time I met him until the day I was discharged. He was very friendly and honest at giving me all the options of treatments that were open to me. I felt very comfortable with him throughout my treatments and he showed a real interest in my recovery and my progress. He was always quick to respond to any emails of questions that I had. I cannot recommend him more highly.

I couldn’t have been happier with my experience and surgery with Mark Phillips. His skilful intervention in my Dupuytrens contracture has enabled me to once more play the more demanding chordal pieces in the piano repertoire. I recovered very quickly with no pain and no scar. Having recovered the use of my 5th finger in the left hand I can now also play my long neglected string instruments . His manner is friendly and professional and it was a joy to meet him and his team.

I’d recommend Mr Phillips wholeheartedly. He has first-hand knowledge of the way musicians use their hands. Mr Phillips is easy to talk to and he has genuine empathy. Every consultation contains advice, detailed explanations and recommendations. Treatment is excellent: I have had injections and an operation with Mr Phillips. I had 100% confidence in his work and we have achieved 100% success in treating my problems.
