Mr. Mark Phillips is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in adult hand and wrist surgery, trauma surgery, elbow conditions, and complex injury surgery. He has a particular interest in performance-related conditions in musicians and sees private patients at the London Bridge Hospital.
Mr. Phillips graduated with his primary medical qualification from Cambridge in 1989. After completing basic surgical training and a research post at the Royal Free Hospital, he undertook specialist training in Orthopaedics and Trauma on the King's College Hospital rotation. Following his higher surgical training, he pursued two fellowships: one in hand surgery at the Plastic Surgical Department at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, and another in fracture reconstruction at the University of Pisa, Italy.
Having spent 14 years as an NHS Consultant, including 12 years at King's College Hospital, Mr. Phillips now consults exclusively in a private capacity. He is a passionate teacher and has taught at all levels, engaging with the public, allied healthcare professionals, medical students, and fellow consultants. He has convened courses on complex fracture management and has been invited as a faculty member at meetings throughout the UK and across Europe.
His academic interests at King's College Hospital focused on the management of bone defects caused by high-energy trauma and the use of technology, such as growth factors, to enhance healing.

Mr Mark Phillips is consistently clear, friendly, and professional. He provides full explanation, easing patient worries. His skilled hand surgery achieves excellent outcomes for issues like wrist fractures and Dupuytren's contracture. Many patients report relief from hand and wrist pain; successful carpal tunnel decompression is also common.
Very positive experience having a consultation with Mr Mark Phillips, provided me with a clear diagnosis and several options for further treatment.
Mr Phillips has been a joy to deal with over the last couple of months. He is attentive, with excellent listening skills whilst providing a high level of patient care and offering solutions with practical advice. Quite literally "life changing" I highly recommend him as a surgeon and consultant.
Super experience from 1st consultation through to surgery & followup appointment. Mark has a calm & gentle manner, he explains everything really well and even let me select music I liked during surgery! If I need my other hand 'fixing' before he retires, I will definitely want Mark as my Consultant. Many thanks
Consultation was extremely thorough and he took the time to discuss the procedure, after affects and complications in detail.
Mr Phillips showed to be confident and professional. His clear and comprehensive explanation about the symptoms gave me a good understanding of the treatment (steroid injection/s) and rationale behind it. This understanding made me feel more relaxed and focus on the healing process, without raising my expectations. After a week only from my visit, I acknowledge that I can now perform pain free almost any activities of my everyday life. When I woke up this morning a nerve of my wrist clicked as (I felt) to free some kind of internal block. As a result of all this , I am feeling hopeful that Mr Phillips therapy is working well for me and next week I will write and ask to see Mr Phillips again, as I am still experiencing pain if I press the base of my thumb or perform a Filkenstein test.
Mark phillips is incredibly thorough and reassuring . Does everything to answer your concerns and worries
Mr Phillips was very clear and concise when going through the diagnosis and pathophysiology of De Quervains. I was also very relieved when he suggested and promptly administered a steroid injection which has proven to be effective in managing my condition so far.
Mark has been fantastic throughout my experience breaking my wrist, he understood my eagerness to return to training and supported me in providing the best treatment to get me back on track. He has been available when I have needed to check in and the aftercare has been clear around goals for progress. Many thanks!
Mr Phillips is utterly delightful, hugely experienced, a superb communicator, and I trusted him totally. He operated on my left hand on April 3, and so I am now shy of 8 weeks post surgery. I am a doctor and a pianist, and I have just become able to play the piano again post surgery, but am obviously heeding advice to increase time gently as comfort allows. Pain which I experienced with certain chords and sections of pieces before Mr Phillips operated, has entirely disappeared. I cannot praise Mr Phillips enough. Not only do I feel he has done a magnificent job, but he transmits experience, trust, confidence and knowledge of his field. I could not have been in better hands. He is also totally transparent and humble, and very easy to talk with. I used to teach communication skills to GP's, and Mr Phillips has all of these skills in abundance. I cannot recommend him highly enough. Any patient lucky enough to see him is likely to be very happy indeed. Thank you, Mr Phillips, for what you have done for me. I am so blessed that you were my surgeon.
The operation to remove the lump on my hand couldn’t have gone any better. Right from the start Mark made me relax and explaining everything that was going to happen. No questions went unanswered.
A skilled hand and wrist surgeon I'd be happy to refer to and my patients to see

I am London-based, Cambridge and King's College Hospital trained, and was a general trauma and orthopaedic consultant surgeon at King's for about 13 years until 2015. I now only work in HCA private hospitals in central London (Shard, 31 Old Broad Street (Bank)) and operate at London Bridge Hospital. Musicians form a large part of my practice but I see people from all walks of life.
