About Mr Richard Saunders

Mr Rick Saunders is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with specialist expertise in colorectal surgery and minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures. He graduated from the University of Cambridge before completing surgical training in Nottingham and Leicester, where he gained experience in general surgery, proctology, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer.

Following his specialist training, Mr Saunders was awarded a prestigious Fellowship in Canada through the Association of Coloproctology. During this fellowship, he undertook advanced training in laparoscopic surgery, performing a high volume of minimally invasive colorectal procedures and further developing his expertise in contemporary colorectal surgical techniques.

He has been a consultant colorectal surgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals for 19 years and has some of the best clincal outcomes for colorectal cancer surgery in the region (National Bowel Cancer Audit).  Another important subspeciality interest is the surgical managment of inflammatory bowel disease and the outcomes for such patients under his care have been consistently excellent for many years. He been the clincal lead of the colorectal unit in Leeds, chaired the colorectal cancer section of the West Yorkshire & Harrogate Cancer Alliance and contributed to a number of national committees to improve outcomes for patients with colorectal disease.

His clinical practice also covers the diagnosis and management of a broad range of general and colorectal conditions including, abdominal wall and groin herniae, FIT, rectal bleeding, haemorrhoids (piles), anal fissures and fistulas and he has extensive experience with colonoscopy.
