Mr Andrew M. Smith MBChB MD FRCS
Consultant Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary and Laparoscopic Surgeon
Mr Andrew Smith is a Consultant Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Leeds. With more than twenty years’ experience as a consultant surgeon, he is recognised nationally and internationally for his expertise in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery.
His private practice is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of gallbladder disease, gallstones and abdominal wall hernias, including inguinal, femoral, umbilical, paraumbilical and incisional hernias. He performs the vast majority of these operations using laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques, enabling faster recovery, less pain and earlier return to normal activities. Most of his patients are treated as day cases, and he has an exceptionally low conversion rate from laparoscopic to open surgery.
Alongside his elective practice, Mr Smith works within one of the UK’s highest-volume specialist pancreatic and biliary units, caring for patients with both routine and highly complex gallbladder and pancreatic disorders. His extensive experience means he is frequently referred patients with difficult gallstone disease, previous abdominal surgery and recurrent biliary problems.
Mr Smith is committed to delivering personalised care, taking time to explain diagnoses and treatment options clearly so that patients can make informed decisions with confidence. His practice combines technical excellence with an emphasis on safety, compassionate care and excellent clinical outcomes.
He has an outstanding national reputation within surgery. He currently serves as President of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery (AUGIS) and is Past President of the Pancreatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, two of the UK’s leading specialist surgical organisations.
Mr Smith is also a recognised clinical researcher. He is Chief Investigator of the £2.4 million NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) ROSIER Trial, a national multicentre study evaluating the role of laparoscopic cholecystectomy following ERCP for patients with bile duct stones. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers, lectures regularly throughout the UK and internationally, and has trained many consultant surgeons who now practise across Britain and overseas.
His expertise in gallbladder surgery has also been recognised independently, with the Daily Mail Good Doctors Guide naming him as one of the UK’s leading gallbladder surgeons.
Whether treating a straightforward hernia or a complex gallbladder problem, Mr Smith’s philosophy remains the same: to provide expert, evidence-based care using the least invasive approach possible, while ensuring every patient receives the highest standards of safety, communication and support throughout their treatment

Mr Smith made us feel very relaxed and comfortable as he explained about the operation and post op recovery. His professional manner filled us with confidence from the start and we left the meeting with an understanding of what would be taking place in the coming weeks. Overall it was a pleasure meeting Mr Smith and would fully recommend him.
I saw Mr Smith before my operation and, so far, 3 times post op. He is always the ultimate professional, clearly explaining everything says and does. He is easy to talk to and has always made me feel at ease. On
