Mr. Phil Simpson is a highly experienced orthopaedic surgeon with a particular focus on the management of hip and knee conditions. Born and raised in Scotland, he completed his medical degree at Edinburgh Medical School in 1999.
During his training, Mr. Simpson undertook a fellowship in Brisbane, Australia, where he focused on Computer Assisted Knee and Hip Replacement surgery. This international experience enriched his understanding of advanced surgical techniques.
In 2010, Mr. Simpson began in his current role as a consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. His extensive expertise covers the management of hip and knee problems, with a specialisation in joint replacement surgery. He is proficient in performing Hip, Knee, and Partial Knee Replacement surgeries, and his dedication to improving patient outcomes has led him to adopt robotic arm-assisted joint replacement techniques. This advanced approach has demonstrated significant benefits in patient care, particularly in complex cases such as patients with previous hip dysplasia (DDH).
Mr. Simpson is not only a skilled surgeon but is also involved in teaching. He has played a vital role in training the next generation of surgeons and has organised cadaveric surgical training courses across Europe and worldwide.
Beyond his medical career, he has a lifelong passion for sports. He has represented his country in gymnastics and rugby. In 2007, he completed the challenging IronMan South Africa, a long distance triathlon.

The treatment I had at Spire was exceptional. All of the staff were extremely helpful and friendly with nothing being a problem for them. I’ve never met so many lovely people in one place. My hip replacement has been fantastic. I was amazed at how little pain I had after the operation. After 8 weeks, I feel almost back to normal and all of the pain I had before the operation has gone. Even my scar is healing brilliantly and is so neat. I would absolutely recommend Mr Simpson, he has been wonderful.
Was recommended by friends sister found my experience informative and to have discussion and about my case in detail rather than what we can only do under NHS , Onwards upwards
Reassured by a professional who understood my objectives beyond the medical nuances. What Phil was able to do way of extra curricular re assuring emails was also comforting. Finally I confronted Phil on the morning of my Op with disclosure of a tattoo on the hip to be operated on. Rather than ignoring it he worked with it as part of me and had done an outstanding job. Thank you Phil.
Every thing went well recovering nicely mobility and flexibility excellent. Have filled the exercise plan to the letter
Hip Replacement. From beginning to end I felt safe, listened to and informed. Mr Simpson has a lovely manner and made the whole process as stres free as possible I know exactly who to look for if I ever need the other one done !!
I had a Mako robotic assisted total knee replacement with Mr Simpson. Everything was explained perfectly and the operation went well. I am approx 6 weeks in with the new knee and everything has exceeded my expectations. Mr Simpson is a great surgeon and I am very thankful he was available to help me.
I found Dr Simpson very helpful and explained everything to me regarding my health issue.
My visit to Spire Murrayfield was a complete pleasure. From first consultation it was clear to me that this was going to be a very positive process. The staff were all first class, tending to every one of my needs and more. Phil is an extremely positive, knowledgeable, polite and professional person. He visited me a few times during my stay, which was a great help to me. It was clear that he really did care, it's not just a job to him, it's a calling. I will never forget my experience, from start to finish everything was made clear, every one of the staff were a complete pleasure, and my visit was something I will continue to reflect back on with real pleasure and thanks. Restored my faith in the human race, it really did.
Risks explained. Decisions were mine. Mr Simpson had friendly pleasant manner. I have confidence in him and he was recommended by 2 people who have had same procedure.
My experience was first rate , with everything explained clearly at the outset. My operation was successful and I am already feeling a huge improvement in my mobility and have no pain. Mr Simpson was highly competent and I felt really confident in his knowledge and ability to conduct the surgery successfully. I would highly recommend Mr Simpson and his team.
