Mr. Phil Simpson is a highly experienced orthopaedic surgeon with a particular focus on the management of hip and knee conditions. Born and raised in Scotland, he completed his medical degree at Edinburgh Medical School in 1999.
During his training, Mr. Simpson undertook a fellowship in Brisbane, Australia, where he focused on Computer Assisted Knee and Hip Replacement surgery. This international experience enriched his understanding of advanced surgical techniques.
In 2010, Mr. Simpson began in his current role as a consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. His extensive expertise covers the management of hip and knee problems, with a specialisation in joint replacement surgery. He is proficient in performing Hip, Knee, and Partial Knee Replacement surgeries, and his dedication to improving patient outcomes has led him to adopt robotic arm-assisted joint replacement techniques. This advanced approach has demonstrated significant benefits in patient care, particularly in complex cases such as patients with previous hip dysplasia (DDH).
Mr. Simpson is not only a skilled surgeon but is also involved in teaching. He has played a vital role in training the next generation of surgeons and has organised cadaveric surgical training courses across Europe and worldwide.
Beyond his medical career, he has a lifelong passion for sports. He has represented his country in gymnastics and rugby. In 2007, he completed the challenging IronMan South Africa, a long distance triathlon.

Mr Phil Simpson provides professional care, offering clear explanations. Patients report excellent surgical outcomes, with improved mobility and reduced pain. His calm, supportive manner instils patient confidence throughout treatment. Many positive results involve hip replacement and knee replacement procedures, often with robotic assistance.
Excellent. Thorough, understanding, and I received valuable advice and reassurance on how to manage this injury. Thank you.
A very informative and detailed consultation with ample time to ask questions and discuss available options
I cannot thank Mr Phil Simpson enough for the care I received during my robotic assisted hip replacement. From the first consultation through to the follow up appointment. He took time to explain the procedure in great detail and answered all my questions. His confidence in his ability and his friendly manner made me feel very reassured. My surgery has been a great success. My hip pain has gone and my mobility has improved dramatically. The surgery has made such a positive difference to my quality of life. I would highly recommend Mr Simpson to anyone considering hip replacement surgery.
I was extremely relaxed by Mr Simpson, very thorough, evidently had investigated my previous records, careful physical examination and clear explanation of his findings.
Was assessed as making an excellent recovery. Now after 11 weeks, I am walking normally, done some hill walking, swimming and golf. I still do daily knee bending exercises and visit the physiotherapist. But all this counts for nothing without an excellent surgeon. Mr Simpson gave confidence from the first meeting although he was completely frank about the procedure. I am nervous about any surgery yet his way of talking to me calmed me down. I met with Mr Simpson for the final time (this surgery!) on 2 July. His care and guidance continued that day and remember what he advised. As to the pain, that does not last and even his advice on icing the knee is still observed. If this knee lasts 25 years, I hope Mr Simpson can give me a new one when I am 98! I am so grateful and thankful to Mr Simpson.
Recent post op review . Excellent recovery and now pain free ! I am now considering returning to locum work on short hauls , which I have been unable to consider over the past year.
First class. Fully explained my options and excellent follow up
Dr Simpson understood me and my symptoms like no other doctor has. He explained what he could do and how Necrosis isn't always obvious but his experience and professionalism showed. I would not hesitate in recommending him.
