Mr. Phil Simpson is a highly experienced orthopaedic surgeon with a particular focus on the management of hip and knee conditions. Born and raised in Scotland, he completed his medical degree at Edinburgh Medical School in 1999.
During his training, Mr. Simpson undertook a fellowship in Brisbane, Australia, where he focused on Computer Assisted Knee and Hip Replacement surgery. This international experience enriched his understanding of advanced surgical techniques.
In 2010, Mr. Simpson began in his current role as a consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. His extensive expertise covers the management of hip and knee problems, with a specialisation in joint replacement surgery. He is proficient in performing Hip, Knee, and Partial Knee Replacement surgeries, and his dedication to improving patient outcomes has led him to adopt robotic arm-assisted joint replacement techniques. This advanced approach has demonstrated significant benefits in patient care, particularly in complex cases such as patients with previous hip dysplasia (DDH).
Mr. Simpson is not only a skilled surgeon but is also involved in teaching. He has played a vital role in training the next generation of surgeons and has organised cadaveric surgical training courses across Europe and worldwide.
Beyond his medical career, he has a lifelong passion for sports. He has represented his country in gymnastics and rugby. In 2007, he completed the challenging IronMan South Africa, a long distance triathlon.

Dr Simpson understood me and my symptoms like no other doctor has. He explained what he could do and how Necrosis isn't always obvious but his experience and professionalism showed. I would not hesitate in recommending him.
Consultant was very personable and explained diagnosis and treatment extremely well.
I have my life back after the hip replacement. Mr Simpson is the consummate professional and an excellent surgeon. Thank you
This was my first major operation and thankfully everything has gone to plan. While it was quite an experience, the medical and support team were first class.
Phil was professional, considered and outlined the procedures, possible adverse events clearly as well as recovery and healing times. All of which have proved conservative.
Mr Simpson provided very detailed explanations on the procedure and outcomes as well as confidence in his experience
The treatment I had at Spire was exceptional. All of the staff were extremely helpful and friendly with nothing being a problem for them. I’ve never met so many lovely people in one place. My hip replacement has been fantastic. I was amazed at how little pain I had after the operation. After 8 weeks, I feel almost back to normal and all of the pain I had before the operation has gone. Even my scar is healing brilliantly and is so neat. I would absolutely recommend Mr Simpson, he has been wonderful.
Was recommended by friends sister found my experience informative and to have discussion and about my case in detail rather than what we can only do under NHS , Onwards upwards
Reassured by a professional who understood my objectives beyond the medical nuances. What Phil was able to do way of extra curricular re assuring emails was also comforting. Finally I confronted Phil on the morning of my Op with disclosure of a tattoo on the hip to be operated on. Rather than ignoring it he worked with it as part of me and had done an outstanding job. Thank you Phil.
Mr Simpson is an excellent surgeon. He always has time for his patients, and has excellent technical skills.
