Mr Patrick Watmough

Mr Patrick Watmough is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in foot and ankle surgery. He practises privately at Beaumont Hospital, Bolton and The Beardwood Hospital, Blackburn, and holds an NHS Consultant post at the Royal Bolton Hospital. He has extensive experience in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of lower limb conditions, with a specialist interest in foot and ankle disorders.

Mr Watmough's elective practice encompasses all aspects of foot and ankle surgery, including the management of arthritis, bunions, toe deformities, tendon disorders, sports injuries, instability, nerve entrapment, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon conditions and complex foot deformities. He also treats acute fractures and trauma affecting the foot and ankle, tailoring treatment to each patient's individual needs and lifestyle. Where appropriate, he offers both non-operative and operative treatment options, ensuring that patients are fully informed and involved in decisions regarding their care.

He graduated from the University of Dundee in 1996, during which time he took a year out of his medical studies to undertake additional training in Forensic Medicine. Following graduation, he completed his basic and higher surgical training throughout the North West of England. He became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) in 1999 and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS Tr & Orth) in 2005. In 2008, he successfully completed his specialist orthopaedic training and was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST).

During the final year of his specialist training, Mr Watmough undertook an advanced Foot and Ankle Fellowship at the internationally renowned Wrightington Hospital, one of the UK's leading orthopaedic centres. Working alongside one of the pioneers responsible for the development of modern total ankle replacement surgery, he gained valuable experience in the management of both routine and highly complex foot and ankle conditions. This fellowship provided advanced training in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, ankle replacement, arthrodesis procedures and the management of complex deformity and arthritis.

In January 2009, Mr Watmough was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Bolton Hospital, where he has established a busy specialist practice. Over the course of his consultant career, he has developed significant expertise in lower limb reconstruction and has treated thousands of patients with both common and complex orthopaedic conditions. His practice combines evidence-based treatment with a personalised approach, recognising that every patient has different expectations, lifestyles and treatment goals.

Mr Watmough is committed to providing patient-centred care, placing great emphasis on clear communication, shared decision-making and realistic expectations. He believes that successful treatment begins with a thorough assessment and an accurate diagnosis, allowing each patient to understand the full range of treatment options available. Whenever possible, conservative treatments such as physiotherapy, activity modification, shockwave therapy, orthotic management and injection therapies are considered before surgery is recommended.

Throughout his career, Mr Watmough has maintained a strong commitment to education and the training of future orthopaedic surgeons. He has been actively involved in teaching junior doctors and specialist orthopaedic trainees within the NHS and contributes to the development of the next generation of surgeons through regular clinical supervision and practical training.

He also remains committed to continuing professional development and keeping up to date with advances in orthopaedic surgery. By incorporating modern surgical techniques and evidence-based practice into his work, he strives to deliver the highest standards of care while achieving the best possible outcomes for his patients.

Mr Watmough is known for his approachable manner and his commitment to delivering high-quality care in both the NHS and private sectors. Outside of work, Mr Watmough enjoys spending time with his family. He is married and values travelling and holidaying with his five young adult children whenever the opportunity arises. Living in Lancashire, he also enjoys walking in the beautiful Ribble Valley, where he appreciates the opportunity to relax and unwind in the countryside.
