Mr Joseph Varghese is a consultant general surgeon at BMI

The Beaumont Hospital, Bolton, and The Royal Bolton Hospital. He specialises in

upper GI and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, with an interest in reflux (GORD),

gall bladder and hernias. He also specialises in endoscopies, colonoscopies,

and endoscopic removal of gall stones from the bile duct (ERCP). He provides

lymph node biopsies and laparoscopic splenectomy for the haematologists.

Mr Varghese studied medicine at Mangalore University, India.

He completed his basic and higher surgical training at the Aberdeen Royal

Infirmary a prestigious hospital in the North West of Scotland. He has been

fortunate to have been trained under various surgical pioneers and has gained

invaluable professional expertise from them.

Having attended various laparoscopic training programmes in

Europe, Mr Varghese undertakes day case laparoscopic procedures as routine

practise. Mr Varghese has successfully performed a large volume of laparoscopic

intra thoracic hiatus hernia repairs, as both elective and emergency. His case

volume and success of abdominal wall reconstruction reflects his surgical skills

and referral to his practice.

He has a strong interest in research, audit and providing

training programmes within the surgical specialty. He has been involved in the

GDG (guidance development group of NICE). Mr Varghese conducts Master classes, participated

by consultants from other hospitals, on Large Intra thoracic hernia repairs. He

directs advanced laparoscopic courses for the Royal College of Surgeons,

London.

He is a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great

Britain and Ireland and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He

is also a member of the British Medical Association and a member of the Medical

Societies of Manchester and Bolton.
