Mr Majid Hashemi is the Senior Bariatric and Upper GI Consultant Surgeon in North London. He specialises in surgery on the oesophagus and stomach, and performs anti-reflux surgery and surgery for obesity. Procedures he carries out include laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair and Linx implant, abdominal hernia repair, laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric banding and endoscopic gastric balloon placement.
Mr Hashemi graduated from Manchester University before training in London and at Addenbrooke's and other hospitals in East Anglia. He spent 15 months as a fellow to Dr DeMeester at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. In 2001 he was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at University College London and was the Surgical Tutor and Head of Academic Surgery at the Whittington Hospital and Archway Campus between 2001 and 2007. He was also Chair of the Surgery Module Management Group for Surgery Undergraduate Studies for University College Medical School from 2007 to 2010.
In 2001 Mr Hashemi established bariatric services in North London, where he set up one of the first Obesity Surgery MDTs in the country, and for a number of years he was the only surgeon performing bariatric surgery in the area. He has a notable safety record, with over 3000 stomach and oesophagus operations performed at a zero mortality rate.
In addition to surgery for the treatment of obesity, Mr Hashemi provides an extensive range of services in oesophageal and gastric surgery, including assessment and treatment for patients with hiatus hernia, oesophageal reflux or motility problems including those requiring revision surgeries. He routinely performs oesophageal and gastric resections as part of the team at the designated Cancer Centre at University College London Hospital of which he previously Head of service.
Mr Hashemi was one of only 12 surgeons in the UK who offered the LINX procedure for acid reflux and he performed the first Linx implant procedure carried out in London. He was also the first surgeon in the UK to place the Linx device in a patient after a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
His significant experience allows him to give a focused, patient-centred approach, tailoring treatment for each individual and their specific needs. It is his firm belief that patients should be involved in all major decisions throughout their treatment.
Mr Hashemi is actively involved in training, education and research and has led a number research projects, and is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences. He is currently supervising a number of projects including a PhD in clinical aspects of Achalasia of the oesophagus. He is also the Medical Chair of Action for Achalasia.

I recently had hiatus hernia repair surgery (LINX implant.). I cannot speak highly enough of Mr Hashemi. Since I first met him 6 years ago, I have always found him to be a kind, warm and caring clinician. He took the time to really get to know and understand me, and I have always felt included and consulted in the decision making around my surgery. I never felt rushed or pressurised to proceed until I was ready. Leading up to the surgery and beyond, he explained to me exactly what to expect, and I continue to feel fully supported by Mr Hashemi post surgery. I have always had, and continue to have, complete confidence in his expertise, judgement and skill. My heartfelt thanks to him for everything.
I was very nervous to proceed with seeing a Consultant General Surgeon following a triple diagnosis of GERD, a Hiatus Hernia and Barrett’s Oesophagus, but couldn’t be more pleased after seeing Mr Hashemi. He explained all the options with articulate detail and then operated, repairing the Hernia and fitting a Lynx implant to suppress the acid reflux. Less than 2 weeks into my recovery I’m without pain or discomfort and able to look forward to continuing symptom free. Nothing but admiration and gratitude to Majid for his outstanding care and professionalism. DH
Mr Hashemi was very kind and explained everything very carefully
Although I was experiencing discomfort during my post surgery recovery. Mr Hashemi stayed in contact and sorted out problems as soon as possible.

Thank you for your kind comments and I am delighted that you are doing well.
Mr Hashemi was very pleasant. He gave plenty of time for questions and gave full explanations. I had every confidence in him.
Dr. Hashemi treated me for a malignant GIST in 2023. I was referred to him by Dr. Navratanam who had done my endoscopy. What sets him apart is his ability to deal with a complex issue in an empathetic manner and guide you to the best treatment available. Right from the first consultation he explained everything about the GIST in detail and outlined options of treatment. He took the effort to reassure me and really helped put my mind at ease. He referred me to the RMH for oncology consultations & surgery and worked together with the doctors there to decide the course of treatment. His is vastly experienced and this clearly stood out in the pre- op assessment / treatment which helped make the operation relatively simple and straightforward. He is a special person and a gifted doctor. I cannot recommend a better gastric surgeon to go to.

Thank you for your kind words and for your trust and confidence. I am really pleased that you did so well.
