Mr Jonathan Clamp is the Senior Consultant Spinal Surgeon and Head of Service for Spinal Surgery at the Royal Derby Hospital spinal centre. He is a fellowship-trained spinal surgeon with extensive expertise in the management of both adult and paediatric spinal conditions.
Mr Clamp’s clinical practice covers the full spectrum of spinal pathology, including degenerative spinal disorders, spinal trauma, metastatic spinal disease, and complex spinal deformity. He has a particular interest in conditions causing back pain, neck pain, arm pain, and leg pain, and routinely utilises advanced minimally invasive spinal surgical techniques to support recovery and improve patient outcomes.
He manages a high volume of highly complex spinal procedures, including anterior thoracic surgery, multi-level anterior lumbar surgery, and sophisticated three-dimensional adult spinal deformity correction surgery. His work frequently involves tertiary referral cases sent by other consultants due to the complexity of the conditions being treated.
In addition to surgical management, Mr Clamp is highly experienced in advanced spinal injection therapies. His expertise includes cervical and thoracic transforaminal epidural injections and atlanto-axial joint injections for complex spinal pain and neurological conditions.
Mr Clamp is also actively involved in spinal research, education, and surgical training. I had an L4/5 ALIF in February 2022. At the time, I struggled to walk more than 100 yards without pain. Four years later I am training to run the Atlantic Coast Challenge (3 marathons over 3 days). I have no pain at all. Mr Clamp explained the potential risks and benefits before the procedure. He listened to how my problem was affecting me, was honest about possible consequences of surgery, but confident in the potential benefits. I felt fully informed when I made the decision to go ahead with it and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.
Well looked after, and Mr Clamp has such a manner to look after his patient really well. I appreciate everything Mr Clamp has done for me.
Mr Clamp has changed my life. Before being treated by him, having a spinal fusion I was in agony everyday which limited my mobility and everyday activities of living. He truly has restored my love for life, I am now able to walk upright, swim and most importantly sleep through the night. His communication is always clear and candid. He takes time to explain everything and listens to any questions the patient might have. Having major back surgery is very scary, Mr Clamp always provided reassurance and empathy which put all of my anxieties at ease.
