Dear St Thomas'Hospital Team, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to St Thomas'Hospital who cared for me. On Tuesday evening, I went to work for my night shift at around 9 p.m. Unfortunately, I became unwell and my colleagues called an ambulance. I was taken to St Thomas'Hospital where I received excellent care. The ambulance crews were very professional, kind and caring, and I would like to thank them very much.A around 7.00-8.00 a.m. I met Dr Ivan Tomasi. Ivan Tomasi was the most amazing surgeon I could have asked for, from my initial suffering of appendicitis to showing me compassion and kindness and offering me the antibiotic route with elective surgery to follow. The surgery was painless and the after care was amazing, took the time to walk me through everything. Ivan Tomasi calmed me and made the experience so pleasant from start to finish.
Some heroes wear capes. Mine wears scrubs! Mr Tomasi is an absolute hero, truly heaven sent! Not only did he save my life, but he also managed to put my family completely at ease while doing so. Unknown to him, my family and I had recently suffered immense grief, losing my father to pancreatic cancer followed by, and completely unexpectedly, my maternal grandmother just four days later. With other ongoing health battles and cancer diagnoses within our immediate family, we were left shaken and terrified of anything hospital-related. On top of this, I suffer from a severe autoimmune disease (diffuse systemic sclerosis) which affects multiple organs, including my heart and lungs. I arrived at St Thomas' Hospital via ambulance, vomiting and in immense pain. Tests revealed a small bowel obstruction, and I was admitted to the ward, which is where I met Mr Tomasi. At our first interaction, I asked him to be completely open and honest with me, even if the news was tough. He always was. Because surgery posed a heightened risk to my organs, we initially decided a non-invasive plan would be best. Throughout it all, Mr Tomasi ensured my family and I were kept informed at every single stage. Unfortunately, the conservative treatment did not work as hoped, and I required urgent surgical intervention. Mr Tomasi spoke with me in great detail about the procedure, the risks, and what to expect. To say I was nervous is a massive understatement, but I felt entirely safe in his care. He arranged the surgical team fo...
