Mr Ian Sharpe is a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon based at the Exeter Nuffield Hospital. His NHS practice is at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (PEOC). Mr Sharpe specialises in all areas of foot and ankle surgery such as bunion correction, rheumatoid foot reconstruction, and arthroscopic ankle and foot surgery. His particular area of expertise is in the reconstruction of complex injuries of the lower limb, foot, and ankle, and his particular interest lies in ankle replacement surgery (both primary and revision). He works together with physiotherapists, podiatrists, and orthotists to provide a holistic and tailored service catering for a wide range of foot and ankle conditions.
Mr Sharpe gained his medical qualifications at the University of London where he was awarded a Medical Research Council Scholarship and achieved a first-class honours degree in inflammation and neoplasia. Following this, he undertook basic surgical training before gaining fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1995 and training in orthopaedic surgery in the South West of England. Mr Sharpe has been awarded several fellowships including a BOA Travelling Fellowship in Prague and a surgical research fellowship in Sydney where he investigated novel treatment for avascular necrosis of bone. His work in this area earned him the BOA Young Investigator of the Year Award in 2002.
