About Mr Matthew Wilson
Matthew Wilson studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College in London, qualifying in 1997. He completed his orthopaedic training in Reading, Oxford, Derby, Nottingham and spent time with the Trauma Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He is fellowship trained in Hip Reconstruction by the Exeter Hip Unit and in Hip Preservation Surgery by Mr Richard Villar in Cambridge.
Matthew was appointed as a Consultant, specialising in Hip Reconstructive Surgery, to the Exeter Hip Unit in 2010. Matthew has held various national leadership positions and is the current President of the British Hip Society.
Matthew specialises in the diagnosis and management of disorders of the young adult hip, complex primary and revision hip surgery as well as training hip fellows in Exeter and maintaining an interest in research and the long-term outcomes of hip surgery.

Mr Wilson managed my whole experience with professionalism and kindness. I had my left hip replaced in August 2025 and my right hip, involving a 5 hour operation, in December 2025. The operations have changed my life and allowed me to walk normally for the first time in 64 years. Thank you.
Mr Wilson replaced my right hip in 2021 when I was 75 and I was able to do a walk of about 10 miles 9 weeks after the operation. When my right hip became troublesome this year I contacted Mr Wilson without hesitation and he was able to replace my left hip on the 9th April. As previously this latest operation has been a complete success and I am very grateful for all the care and attention that he and his team gave me. Thank you so much.
