Mr Lawes is the Clinical Director for Surgery at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. He was appointed as a consultant colorectal and general surgeon in 2007 having trained in London and USA where he undertook a fellowship in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and hernia surgery. He has extensive experience in treatment of benign and malignant conditions of the anal canal such as haemorrhoids, fissure, polyps and cancers and pelvic floor issues such as incontinence, prolapse and constipation.

Mr. Lawes has worked as a consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells (MTW) NHS Trust since 2007. Since then he has been involved in developing a number of advances in practice including minimally invasive colorectal surgery, enhanced patient recovery following major surgery, setting up a pelvic floor service and integrating gastro-enterology and surgical clinics for the management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Since his appointment Mr. Lawes has held a number of roles in the organisation including lead for governance and patient safety, lead for colorectal surgery, chairman of the Kent and Medway Colorectal Cancer Group, Lead for colorectal research for Kent, Surry and Sussex and is currently the Clinical Director for Surgery at MTW a post he has been in for over 5 years. To date he has been author of over 60 scientific papers, presentations and book chapters relating to surgery.
He qualified from University College London Medical School in 1993 having gained a BSc degree in physiology during his studies. He became an anatomy demonstrator at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School and subsequently commenced his surgical training as SHO at The Middlesex Hospital. On gaining the FRCS examination he trained in North East Thames as a general surgery registrar before becoming a Lecturer at UCL, undertaking a laboratory based research degree investigating the genetic predisposition to the development of colorectal cancer which culminated in a Doctor of Medicine degree. On returning to clinical training he focused on colorectal and laparoscopic surgery working at University College London, The Royal London and St. Bartholomew's Hospital and St. Marks Hospital before moving to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, USA to complete his training. Here he was awarded the position of Assistant Professor of Colorectal Surgery. On returning from the USA in 2007, Mr. Lawes took up his position as Consultant Surgeon.
