Mr. Daniel Dowen is a highly skilled Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with expertise in hip and knee replacement surgery, including complex and revision procedures. He also specialises in keyhole knee surgery and is actively involved in general orthopaedic trauma surgery in his NHS practice at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Mr. Dowen completed his medical training at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2005, and went on to pursue surgical training in the same region. To further develop his skills and knowledge, he completed a year-long fellowship in lower limb joint replacement in Auckland, New Zealand.

Mr Dowen carried out my first hip replacement in 2019. Everything went really well and the hip is still great. Today was in relation to my left hip. The appointment was thorough and I was able to explain my current position and ask questions.

Very positive experience, Mr Dowen was able to diagnose the problem with my replacement hip done in 2009 which had been bothering me for over a year. I had been advised by another orthopaedic surgeon that a second replacement would not be possible. He explained everything to me and reassured me that he would be able to replace this for me. This experience has put my mind at rest and had been reassuring.

I went to see Mr Dowen,as my previous Total knee replacement was not all together successful.He had the patience and skill to operate on my right knee and the result was a massive improvement.I can honestly say the knee is now well on the way back to normal.
The operation that I had was a complex hip replacement due to hip problems that I had as a child. Everything was explained clearly to me beforehand by Mr Dowen including all the risks involved and the possible outcomes of the surgery. This all helped me to make the decision to go ahead with the surgery. I saw Mr Dowen on the morning of the day I was going to have my operation and was able to ask him any questions. I then saw him after the operation, where he clearly explained what had happened in the operation and which surgical plan he had been able to follow. At all times I felt confidence in Mr Dowen and his team. I was kept well informed throughout and made to feel comfortable in everything that was happening.
