Professor Challacombe holds several key positions, including Guy’s & St Thomas’ MDM Urological Cancer and Clinical Robotics Lead, UK Robotic Surgery Mentor, and Robotic Fellowship Director. His training spans Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, The Royal Marsden Hospital, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia, where he was awarded the prestigious Rowan Nicks Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He has also served as the Chairman of the British Association of Urology (BAUS) Oncology Section and received the BAUS Golden Cystoscope award in 2019 for his contributions to British urology. He has performed over 1,600 robotic radical prostatectomies and more than 1,400 robotic upper tract procedures, including 850 robotic partial nephrectomies. With 1,500 holmium laser prostatectomies (HoLEP) to his name, he is among the most experienced in the UK. He has also played a pivotal role in developing the robotic cystectomy and robotic partial nephrectomy programs at Guy’s Hospital, making him the highest volume surgeon for these procedures in the UK.

Professor Challacombe's current research focuses on robotic surgery training, trans-perineal template biopsy techniques, active surveillance of low-risk prostate cancer, and the development of new robotic surgical platforms. He has served as an associate editor for the BJUI and has over 230 peer-reviewed publications. Additionally, he has authored three books and 25 book chapters, sharing his extensive knowledge in minimally invasive and robotic urological techniques.

AI Review Summary

This summary was created by AI based on recent reviews

Professor Ben Challacombe is consistently described as a professional, friendly, caring, and clear specialist. Patients praise his expertise in urological surgery, including HoLEP and prostatectomy, often noting successful outcomes and thorough explanations that instil confidence and trust. Some patients mention issues with chaotic back office support and a brusque manner in face-to-face interactions. Overall feedback highlights excellent care particularly for prostate cancer and procedures like HoLEP and robotic surgery.

Pre-appointment administration was a little slow. After cystoscopy a paper towel would have been useful; the relevant area was very slippery in subsequent handling (ie flow test).

Mr Ben Challacombe is my father’s consultant. He has been incredibly clear and concise as to dad’s diagnosis. Initially dad was seen by an NHS consultant who delivered a diagnosis of kidney cancer with a boxing glove punch. There was no follow up of any kind. Subsequently I decided to take things into my own hands and made an appointment to see Mr Challacombe. The tests and scans were so much more thorough and provided so much more information. Contrary to the first findings, Mr Challacombe gave us a diagnosis that was far from the death sentence that had been brutally served by the first consultant. He advised for dad to have follow up scans every 6 months which has given dad a sense of security. We no longer feel like we are drifting on a raft at sea. The continuity of care has enabled us to get on with our lives thanks to Mr Ben Challacombe.
