Mr Andrew McAndrew

Mr McAndrew is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Reading, UK. Originally graduating with a degree in Medicine from St George's Hospital Medical School in 1990, he went on to complete his basic surgical training in Yorkshire. He undertook two years in full-time research in Sheffield investigating the radiographic classification of callotasis (limb lengthening). After undertaking Higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedics on the Wessex rotation he was appointed as the Illazarov Fellow in Surrey, where he spent a full year in sub-specialist training focusing on trauma and limb reconstruction.

Mr McAndrew introduced the Illazarov system to Reading after he took up a substantive post there in 2007, and has since set up his own limb reconstruction service which focuses on surgical trauma and complex deformity correction cases. He is the Director of Trauma for the Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and played a key role in bidding for the Royal Berkshire Hospital to be recognised as an official Trauma Unit. He has continued to undertake positions of authority and leadership at the Trust to this day, and was the Clinical Director of Trauma & Orthopaedics for three years.

Mr McAndrew has an active role in research. In Reading he has been the principal investigator for 26 national institute of health research (nihr) portfolio studies. He has published widely and has been an invited speaker at trauma conferences in both the UK and Europe.
