Associate Professor Sue Down

Associate Professor Sue Down is a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon. She is a specialist in oncoplastic breast surgery, which combines oncological breast cancer surgery with plastic surgery techniques. This approach aims to provide the best oncological outcome while minimising post-operative issues and optimising cosmetic results.

She has a PhD in Cancer Studies, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Associated Professor Down is the current Clinical Lead for her NHS breast unit, the James Paget University Hospital. She has a particular interest in medical edication both in the UK and abroad, and is National Chair of the Education and Training Committee at the Association of Breast Surgery, and a board member for the European Breast Surgery Qualification. She is also Course Director for the international Masters Degree in Oncoplastic Surgery, which provides online training to breast surgeons globally.

Her specialist operative skills include breast cancer surgery using oncoplastic techniques, which help maintain breast shape and minimise post-operative issues by remodelling breast tissue. She also specialises in risk-reducing surgery for women at a high risk of developing breast cancer. Additionally, she has expertise in treating older women with breast cancer, using their skills and experience to provide tailored care for this patient group.
