Dr Michael FitzPatrick is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and scientific researcher based in Oxford, UK. Dr Michael FitzPatrick has a particular specialist interest in coeliac disease, clinical nutrition, reflux, and functional gastrointestinal disorders including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Dr FitzPatrick leads the Oxford coeliac service at the John Radcliffe Hospital and is a consultant in the complex nutrition team in Oxford, which provides tertiary care to patients in the region.
His medical education and academic training has spanned several institutions, including Jesus College, University of Cambridge, Barts and The London School of Medicine, and Lincoln College, University of Oxford. He has worked at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford since 2015 and completed his DPhil research (PhD) in 2020, where he studied the immunology of coeliac disease, intestinal transplantation, and fundamental aspects of T-cell biology.
Dr FitzPatrick is a scientific researcher at the Translational Gastroenterology and Liver Unit, University of Oxford, leading a research group studying the role of the gut immune system in GI disease, including coeliac disease. He supervises doctoral students, teaches undergraduate medical students, publishes in peer-reviewed journals, and presents his research internationally. He lives in North Oxford with his wife and 3 sons.

I had both a gastroscopy and colonoscopy and was extremely pleased with the whole experience. Doctor Fitzpatrick was excellent — professional, gentle and very reassuring throughout both procedures. He explained everything clearly and made me feel at ease. The nursing staff was also kind, friendly and attentive from start to finish. I felt very well looked after and in safe hands throughout. I would definitely recommend the team.

I have now had two extremely comfortable upper GI endoscopies with Dr FitzPatrick at the Manor, and I cannot praise him highly enough. He is communicative, professional, informative, helpful and supportive, as well as clearly being an expert in his field. I had initially dreaded the procedure, having heard some traumatic stories from NHS patients who had chosen minimal sedation so they could drive themselves home afterwards. Dr FitzPatrick completely allayed my fears and carefully explained the options and use of sedation. My experience was so comfortable that I was completely unaware of anything between the beginning and end of the procedure. I would therefore encourage anyone undergoing an Upper GI endoscopy to opt for sedation. If you are fortunate enough to be treated by Dr FitzPatrick, you will be in excellent hands. I now have a much better understanding of coeliac disease and feel reassured knowing that doctors such as Dr FitzPatrick are also contributing to research in this important field. Thank you
When I first met Dr. FirzPatrick, I felt broken from the inside. I was so tired, I was not sure which way was up. He was extremely kind and patient through the first Endoscopy.
