About Professor Maxine Tran

Professor Maxine Tran is a distinguished Consultant Urologist specialising in urological oncology and general urology, with a particular focus on the diagnosis, assessment, and management of kidney tumours. Her clinical practice encompasses both benign and malignant renal conditions, as well as complex inherited kidney cancer pre-disposition syndromes. Dedicated to delivering patient-centred care, Professor Tran places strong emphasis on clear communication and shared decision-making, helping patients understand their diagnostic pathways and choose treatment plans tailored to their individual needs.

Professor Tran earned her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) alongside a Bachelor of Science (BSc) from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, qualifying in 1999. She completed her surgical training in London before being awarded a Medical Research Council fellowship to undertake a PhD at Imperial College London. She subsequently completed specialist urological surgical training as a clinical lecturer at Cambridge University. A Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Urology, FRCS (Urol), Professor Tran is an active member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons. She also serves on key advisory bodies, including the European Association of Urology guideline panel for kidney cancer, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence committee, and the Board of Trustees for Kidney Cancer UK.

In her daily practice, Professor Tran offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment across a broad spectrum of urological conditions. Her expertise ranges from investigating blood in the urine (haematuria) and general urological complaints to performing complex minimally invasive and open surgical procedures for renal lesions. She has a deep interest in nephron-sparing approaches designed to preserve kidney function whenever clinically appropriate. In addition to her clinical commitments, Professor Tran leads research into improving diagnostic accuracy for small renal masses and expanding non-invasive treatment options to reduce unnecessary surgical procedures for benign conditions.
