I had a HOLEP procedure carried out by Mr Matthew Liew in November 2025 at Spire Manchester Hospital. I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending Mr Liew and the Hospital to anyone considering this procedure. Mr Liew is a very likeable, professional and considerate doctor whom I had full confidence in from the first consultation. He explained everything including the short term after effects very accurately and after only a few weeks after the procedure my symptoms and quality of life are massively improved. Nightime visits to the loo are on the verge of stopping and I no longer worry about knowing where the loos are when away from home. Thank you Mr Liew

I was referred to Mr Liew for a HoLEP operation. I was seen promptly and operated on within a month. The procedure was clearly explained as were the side effects. Recovery was within the timescale described

The Holep procedure carried out by Matthew Liew has been a complete success. From suffering with urinary hesitation and retention I am now able to lead a completely normal life only needing to visit the toilet every 2 to 3 hours. Within 6 weeks of surgery I was urinating freely with no hesitation and the fear of searching out toilet facilities gone completely. The whole surgical experience from initial consultation to post operative appointments has been exemplary.

From the moment I met him I knew I was talking to someone at the top of his field . I had been badly let down by the hospital in Stoke . I had been using a catheter for four months and there was no clear plan to carry out the surgery I needed . I saw Mr Liew on November 12th 2025 and my operation was on December 3rd 2025 and was a complete success. If you have problems with an enlarged prostate or similar I cannot reccomend Mr Liew highly enough . He has a clear expertise in this field and I am really grateful for his help .

I was referred for Holip surgery by my NHS consultant in Oct 24 as I was self catheterising 4 times daily. In June 25 I was called for a pre-op. Previously I had researched what was involved and sought out private surgery options. By September having heard nothing further from the NHS only that I was still on 'The List' I phoned Spire Manchester. Meeting with Mr Liew a week later I was confident I had made to right decision .Aware I had a huge prostate 240gms that needed surgery I decided there and then to go ahead and received surgery a few weeks later. At age 79 it was the best money I have ever spent. Quickly back on my feet,I was home two days later and soon driving once more. Quite different from the recovery from my Terps prostate op seven years earlier. I found the whole experience very professional and have no hesitancy in recommending Mr Liew at Spire whatsoever if you are in the situation in which I found myself.

Although I'm based in the north of England, under London Prostate Clinic they had been keeping a watching brief on a low level prostate cancer diagnosis and enlarged prostate since 2018. Taking a daily Tamsulosin tablet had been effective until December last year when I had a UTI that made me quite ill. In March this year, another serious UTI caused me to have a catheter fitted at an A+E hospital. My difficulty passing urine had worsened due to the increasing enlargement of the prostate, so after research I decided that the HoLep route of treatment would be the most effective and have the least side effects long term. I discovered Dr. Matthew Liew working out of Spire Manchester hospital and from the first consultation he put my mind at ease with his calm professional manner and good humour. The operation date was arranged within 3 months and was a complete success. I am now back to normal urine flow and complete bladder emptying. My PSA reading has dropped from a high of 11.5 to 5.2. I had 2 post op consultations with Dr. Liew where any questions or concerns were discussed and I am now looking forward to maintaining a normal life, urologically speaking! (age 66).

The operation itself was a tremendous success. There was very little blood, no incontinence and I am gradually returning to a normal pre-BPH life. However, the first few days after the operation were stressful due to constipation for which I received an enema. The Spire nurses were extremely helpful and kind. My recovery after that was very good apart from getting a UTI which was resolved by 7 days of Nitrofurantoin. I waited quite a long time before seeing a GP about this as I thought my urine was cloudy simply from the healing process. This is a SIGNIFICANT issue in my opinion. Patients need more guidance on this dilemma. The longer a UTI goes on the more danger of it becoming chronic. I felt that the follow up appointment at 6 weeks was useful but I really think a second follow up at 3 months should be included in the care package. My bladder is still getting its strength back after so many years of retention and the PVR can still be quite high sometimes but also minimal when the bladder has not been stressed. So in summary, HOLEP absolutely amazing but UTI and bladder recovery can be issues that maybe need a second follow up (perhaps unless clear instructions are given to primary care for follow up).

Never easy as a male to go and get an issue in the testicle area looked at, however Mr Liew was extremely professional and made an uncomfortable issue, feel comfortable. Clear and concise communication throughout. I would highly recommend Mr Liew.
