About Mr Matthew Liew
Mr Matthew Liew is a Consultant Urological Surgeon based in Warrington and Manchester, practising privately at Spire Cheshire and Spire Manchester Hospitals and within the NHS at Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust. His sub-specialty interests include benign prostate surgery, kidney stone disease, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer diagnostics. He is the Deputy Clinical Director for Innovation in Liverpool University Hospitals. He has pioneered a number of 'first in UK' procedures. He participates in the largest en bloc bladder tumour resection international registry.
Mr Liew established the Greater Manchester NHS Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) service in 2017, and launched the first North West private HoLEP service at Spire Manchester in 2024. He is the highest volume HoLEP surgeon in the North West, and has carried out 156 cases in the past year (July 2025-26). He is a recognised HoLEP proctor and trained numerous consultant colleagues in the region. He is recognised as a Key Opinion Leader in Endourology, and has worked with a number of industry partners. He is an invited speaker on HoLEP and chaired sessions for the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS).
He graduated from Bart’s and The Royal London Hospital with MBBS and BMedSci (Hons, First Class) degrees, and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) by the University of Manchester for his research on kidney cancer chemotherapy resistance at the Christie Hospital.
An active researcher, Mr Liew has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers, served as Chief and Principal Investigator in international clinical trials, and contributed to National Bladder Cancer GIRFT guidelines, and European Urology Prostate Cancer guidelines.

The initial consultation with Mr Liew was very informative and clear. Pre-operatively I was assessed appropriately and given information about my operation by staff who were professional and supportive. My operation went very well and I experienced no discomfort after the surgery. At all stages of my inpatient care, the staff were extremely professional and caring and kept me informed. After being discharged home, I had some medical issues relating to my operation and received excellent support and care from the staff at Spire. The experience has significantly improved my quality of life and I would highly commend Mr Liew and his team and this operation to anyone seeking medical support for symptoms of prostate enlargement.

I had an adult circumcision due to phimosis in August 2026. Matthew provided me with clear and honest options on the outcome and the actual procedure (eg., local vs general). He empowered to make the decision that was right for me and my circumstances. He is also very approachable and you don’t feel uncomfortable discussing intimate medical and bodily details. I was particularly nervous before my op, but Matthew was very calming and reassuring - as were the Spire staff. The whole process was great, Matthew is a brilliant doctor.

Final discharge appointment with Mr Liew went well with good results from flow test, hospital staff were great as always. I felt informed and was happy to be discharged.
Pleased I had the operation. Wish I’d had it sooner. However, given the demands on the surgeon re the procedure was reassured by the number of times Mr Liew had done this surgery. Was anxious about pausing the blood thinner but stopping and restarting was no problem.
Having an operation with a GA can never be pleasant, but the care I received from Mr Liew and the team at Spire was exemplary.
He was very empathic ,explained procedures and the encouraged questions.
Very professional, all my questions where answered and I was provided with all necessary help
