Mr Richard Simpson

Mr Richard Simpson is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Royal Bolton Hospital with specialist expertise in urinary tract stone disease, paediatric urology, and men’s health. Raised in Bolton, he completed his undergraduate education at University of Leeds, graduating with first-class honours in Anatomy in 2012 before obtaining his MBChB in Medicine in 2014. He subsequently returned to the North West to complete his surgical and urological training.

During his postgraduate training, Mr Simpson earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Urology from University of Salford and completed master’s level studies in Medical Education at Edge Hill University.

Mr Simpson has developed a recognised specialist interest in urinary tract stone disease and has played a leading role in developing a regional specialist stone multidisciplinary team. His clinical practice also includes paediatric urology, treatment of benign prostate conditions, and diagnostic procedures for urological cancers. He has been instrumental in re-establishing a locally led paediatric urology service at Royal Bolton Hospital.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Simpson has contributed to research in men’s health and urology, authoring peer-reviewed publications and presenting internationally on innovative shock wave lithotripsy pathways and strategies to reduce catheter-associated infection rates in hospital settings. He maintains a strong focus on clinical governance, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement.

A dedicated educator throughout his career, Mr Simpson now leads medical student teaching within his department and is recognised for his enthusiasm, mentorship, and support for trainee doctors.
