Dr. Joanna Grogono

Dr Joanna Grogono is a Consultant Cardiologist at Derriford Hospital and Peninsula Heart Clinic, with specialist expertise in heart failure and cardiac device implantation. She graduated from Imperial College London in 2007 and completed her cardiology training at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford between 2014 and 2022. She was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist in April 2022.

Dr Grogono’s clinical practice focuses on the diagnosis and management of heart failure, as well as the implantation and follow-up of cardiac devices including; pacemakers, defibrillators, cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices, and implantable loop recorders. She has performed over 1,000 device implantations and holds full accreditation from the British Heart Rhythm Society.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr Grogono has a strong academic background and was awarded a PhD for her research into inhaled therapies for breathlessness in heart failure. She maintains an active research portfolio and regularly presents her work at national and international conferences.

She is a member of the British Cardiovascular Society and the British Society for Heart Failure and serves as the regional representative for ‘Women in Cardiology,’ promoting gender diversity within the specialty. She plays a key role in developing the heart failure and device services in Plymouth.
