About Dr James Penny

Dr James Penny is a dedicated Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon who provides expert surgical care for a wide range of joint and musculoskeletal conditions. Specialising in hip and knee disorders, he focuses on restoring joint function, alleviating pain, and delivering tailored treatment plans that help patients regain their mobility and independence. His clinical focus encompasses both primary surgical interventions and complex reconstructive procedures following traumatic injury.

Dr Penny began his academic journey by earning a Master of Engineering with Honours from the University of Newcastle in 1998, before graduating with his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Edinburgh in 2008. He became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Scotland in 2011 and subsequently completed a comprehensive Orthopaedic Surgical Training Programme. In 2018, he achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in Trauma and Orthopaedics. To refine his skills in joint reconstruction and trauma care, Dr Penny undertook advanced international clinical fellowships in Auckland, New Zealand, and Melbourne, Australia. He is an active member of the British Orthopaedic Association.

In his day-to-day practice, Dr Penny routinely performs primary total hip replacements, primary total knee replacements, and unicondylar (partial) knee replacements. He possesses expertise in complex revision procedures for failing hip and knee implants, managing prosthetic joint infections, and treating periprosthetic fractures around existing joint replacements. Additionally, his surgical interest extends to bone cancer surgery and orthopaedic major trauma care. Dr Penny is committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care to achieve the best possible outcomes for his patients.
