About Mr Andrew Cattell
Mr Andrew Cattell is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon specialising in Knee Surgery. He has particular expertise in sports-related knee injuries and knee replacement surgery. He also has specialist expertise in ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic surgery, patellofemoral surgery, as well as partial and total knee replacement procedures and robotic knee surgery. He has been certified by the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) as proficient in ACL reconstruction, osteotomy, meniscus, multiligament and patellofemoral surgery, and is the only UK surgeon to be awarded the certificate of excellence in arthroscopic knee surgery by this society.
Mr Cattell completed his medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa in 1999 followed by training in trauma and orthopaedics in South Africa. Subsequently, he pursued postgraduate training in the United Kingdom, mainly on the Oswestry rotation in 2011. During this period, he developed a keen interest in sports knee surgery and knee replacement surgery.
Earning fellowship status with the Royal College of Surgeons in 2016, Mr Cattell went on to complete a complex trauma fellowship in Nottingham in 2017. Following this, he secured fellowship positions in sports knee and knee replacement surgery at Wrightington Hospital and Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (Exeter).
In addition to his medical qualifications, Mr Cattell holds a Master's degree in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University, with a dissertation focused on evaluating the development of a novel knee replacement.
Joining James Cook University Hospital in 2019, and subsequently the University Hospital of North tees in 2024, Mr Cattell maintains a busy NHS practice, overseeing orthopaedic trauma and an elective practice focussed on all aspects of knee surgery.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Cattell is the clinical supervisor for several registrars and actively participates in teaching both locally and on national specialist orthopaedic exam courses.

Hi I seen you back in December again about my left knee we discussed a few options and you were going to discuss at the board I still haven’t heard anything as to what is happening I hope I don’t get passed around and left out the system for another 3 yrs
I was totally amazed and satisfied with my treatment by Mr Cattell at the Nuffield hospital. He has a really good relationship and bedside manner with patients. My operation was a total success and I walked un aided from the hospital the same day. A very affable and extremely excellent surgeon.
Dr Cattell was professional and extremely easy to communicate with during the whole process from diagnostics, surgery and through to aftercare.
I cannot rate Mr Cattell highly enough. From my first appointment to my last appointment he was incredibly patient and answered all of my questions in a way that I could understand so I felt confident going ahead with my operation and into my recovery.
