About Mr James Pegrum
Mr James Pegrum is a Royal College of Surgeons Margaret Witt Scholar and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist focus on hip and knee surgery, including both primary and revision joint replacement and arthroscopic sports injury procedures. He is recognised for his patient-centred approach, taking time to conduct thorough assessments and develop individually tailored treatment plans for each patient presenting with hip or knee pathology.
He completed his surgical training within leading orthopaedic centres in Oxford and across the UK, gaining extensive experience in complex lower limb reconstruction. During his training, Mr Pegrum was awarded the Royal College of Surgeons Margaret Witt Scholarship and twice received the Nuffield Prize for research into hip injuries.
His clinical practice covers the full spectrum of hip and knee conditions, including osteoarthritis, ligament and meniscal injuries, and sports-related trauma. He performs a high volume of hip and knee replacement procedures annually, alongside partial knee replacements and arthroscopic interventions, with a focus on improving functional outcomes and supporting rapid recovery.
Mr Pegrum has a particular research interest in optimising postoperative recovery and enhancing surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and continues to contribute to ongoing research in orthopaedic innovation and rehabilitation.
Alongside his clinical and academic work, he is actively involved in surgical education, regularly teaching and supervising trainee surgeons in Bristol and beyond. He is frequently invited to present at national and international meetings and is the recipient of multiple teaching awards in recognition of his contribution to medical education and training.

Mr Pegrum’s friendly, open and straightforward manner inspired confidence. He listened carefully to my symptoms and concerns and explained clearly the reasons for his suggested treatment. At no time did I feel pressured into making a quick decision. I felt the decision of surgery I did make was based on the clearest information. Despite a delay in the time of my surgery mr Pegrum took the time to keep me informed and reassured and after surgery he was quick to see me and to ring and reassure my husband. I cannot speak too highly of Mr Pegrum’s professionalism and kindness.

I had a very positive experience with my total hip replacement surgery conducted by Mr Pegrum. My appointments were very thorough and the forthcoming procedure was fully explained to me. All staff were friendly, professional and supportive and my stay in hospital and post surgery was excellent. My follow on physio was of great value. My Pegrum and his team are dedicated to patient care and outcomes.
From start to finish I have received exceptional treatment. Always informative, giving great advice and even telling me to slow down when my enthusiasm in recovery got the better of me.
I highly recommend Mr James Pegrum and his team for knee surgery, especially total knee replacement. My recent visit, Mr Pegrum asked and listened to how my recovery was going, explaining stages of recovery and how I would be feeling. He was kind and reassuring which made me come away from the appointment feeling happy and confident that all was well.
