Mr James Pegrum is a Royal College of Surgeons Margaret Witt Scholar and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist focus on hip and knee surgery, including both primary and revision joint replacement and arthroscopic sports injury procedures. He is recognised for his patient-centred approach, taking time to conduct thorough assessments and develop individually tailored treatment plans for each patient presenting with hip or knee pathology.

He completed his surgical training within leading orthopaedic centres in Oxford and across the UK, gaining extensive experience in complex lower limb reconstruction. During his training, Mr Pegrum was awarded the Royal College of Surgeons Margaret Witt Scholarship and twice received the Nuffield Prize for research into hip injuries.

His clinical practice covers the full spectrum of hip and knee conditions, including osteoarthritis, ligament and meniscal injuries, and sports-related trauma. He performs a high volume of hip and knee replacement procedures annually, alongside partial knee replacements and arthroscopic interventions, with a focus on improving functional outcomes and supporting rapid recovery.

Alongside his clinical and academic work, he is actively involved in surgical education, regularly teaching and supervising trainee surgeons in Bristol and beyond. He is frequently invited to present at national and international meetings and is the recipient of multiple teaching awards in recognition of his contribution to medical education and training.

Mr Pegrum is perceptive and kind. His explanations are clear and reassuring. I felt there was a very good relationship among his theatre team and I felt informed and supported throughout my operation - so much so I stayed awake throughout! He was also equally clear and reassuring at post op visits. I am enormously grateful for his kind manner, expertise and clarity of information at all times.

I had total hip replacement yesterday at Cheltenham General and Mr Pegrum and his team were wonderful. From the start, I had total confidence in Mr Pegrum and was impressed by his calm, friendly, and efficient manner. I would like to also specifically mention Laura, the anaesthetist. I was nervous about being awake during the surgery and she reassured me that she would be with me the whole time and could adjust the sedation if I became distressed. In the event, I was barely aware of what was happening, so all good. In recovery a lovely nurse chatted to me. Name began with M. We discovered we both liked almond mini magnums! Lesley looked after me on the ward and was great. A very positive experience all round.

I underwent a hip replacement 6 weeks ago by Mr Pegram and visited him for a follow up appointment today. My surgery went really well and having followed the treatment and exercise plan I am delighted to be pain free, walking well and looking forward to getting my life back after a painful few years.

Engaging and understanding Mr James Pegrum immediately put my mind at rest regarding a replacement hip. I had appointments with him via the NHS Pathway both before and after the operation and his professional manner gave me the uptmost confidence. Accordingly, his skill during surgery and closing the wound resulted in minimum discomfort and i was on my feet walking within 24 hours. The wound has healed very well and there have been no complications. A magnificent result from a remarkable surgeon.
