Miss Hui-Ling Kerr

Miss Hui-Ling Kerr is a consultant orthopaedic and spinal surgeon based at Winfield Hospital in Gloucester. 

Miss Kerr earned her medical degree (MB BS) in 2004 from Imperial College London, following a Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Speech Science and Communication from the University of London in 2001. Her initial medical training took place at St Mary’s Medical School, a part of Imperial College London, and she completed her orthopaedic training in the Severn Deanery. She also holds a Master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of Nottingham, awarded with honours.

Before assuming her consultant role, Miss Kerr completed specialised spine fellowships in London, Ontario, Canada, and Cardiff, Wales. Her extensive training and experience include treating adult degenerative spine conditions and general orthopaedic trauma. She is known for her expertise in sciatica, spondylolisthesis, spinal cord compression, back pain, and neck pain.

In addition to her clinical work, Miss Kerr has a strong interest in promoting equal opportunities within the field of surgery. She is an active member of the British Orthopaedic Association’s diversity focus group and serves as the Membership Secretary for the British Association of Spinal Surgeons (BASS). Notably, she was the first female spine surgeon elected to the BASS executive council. Her leadership extends to educational initiatives as well; she is a qualified Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) instructor and has taught on numerous provider courses. In 2013, she earned a Master’s in Medical Education with distinction from the University of Nottingham and completed the British Orthopaedic Association’s prestigious ‘Future Leaders’ programme in 2020.

Miss Kerr’s dedication to education is reflected in her role in training medical professionals and students, including those at the University of Nottingham and on the Royal College of Surgeons spinal courses in Bristol and Cardiff. Her advocacy for diversity in surgery is evident from her organisation of the first ‘Women in Spine’ educational meeting in the UK and her involvement in various international conferences as a speaker. She has authored twelve academic papers published in peer-reviewed journals, further contributing to the field of spinal surgery.

In her role at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and in her private practice at Winfield Hospital, Miss Kerr continues to provide expert care in spinal surgery while advancing the practice through her educational and leadership efforts.
