About Mr James Holton
Mr James Holton is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee arthroplasty and soft tissue disorders. He holds a substantive consultant position at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Mr Holton offers comprehensive management of hip conditions, including primary joint replacement, hip resurfacing, soft tissue (arthroscopic) surgery, and revision arthroplasty for all-cause revisions of the hip. He also performs both partial and total knee replacements, as well as arthroscopic (keyhole) procedures for knee conditions.
He began his surgical training in the West Midlands Deanery (Birmingham) and held an Academic Clinical Fellow (ACF) position with the University of Birmingham, where his research focused on joint preservation using injectable stem cells to enhance chondrocyte growth and development. He went on to complete a Master’s degree in Clinical Research (MRes) before transferring to the Thames Valley Deanery (Oxford) to complete both his academic work and surgical training.
To further refine his specialist expertise in hip and knee surgery, Mr Holton completed a fellowship in lower limb arthroplasty and young adult hip disorders at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. He subsequently undertook a prestigious fellowship at the world-renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, a leading centre for the management of complex primary and revision arthroplasty, including infection and periprosthetic fracture management.

Six week sign off after my total knee replacement. Mr Holton showed me my latest X-ray and compared it to my pre-op X-ray. It was clear to see the difference. Mr Holton then looked at my knee asked me to bend and straighten and was very happy with my progress. He made me feel that all my hard work and the challenges of the past few weeks had been worth it and I left feeling uplifted.
I was seen immediately no waiting at all. Everyone was friendly and efficient. Very pleasant environment.

My second knee replacement under Mr Holtons care. He has a straight no nonsense professional manner underpinned with friendly humour. I have always felt at ease in conversation with him. Throughout my treatment plan I felt listened to and cared for. Both ops have gone extremely well and my hard work with the physio team was also acknowledged. An accomplished surgeon who shows he really cares about his patients outcome.
Mr Holton took time to show me all my xrays which showed the difference between the arthritic knee and the new one and explained what he had done. He put my mind at ease that what I was experiencing was completely normal for 6 weeks post surgery.
