Mr James Berwin is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in Hip and Knee arthroplasty, Revision arthroplasty, Young Adult Hip surgery and Metastatic
Bone Disease.
After qualifying from Barts & The Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry, with
Distinction in Clinical Practice, Mr Berwin completed his Core Surgical Training in London including rotations at Chelsea & Westminster and Guy’s and St Thomas’. He completed his specialist orthopaedic training in Severn Deanery in Southwest England.
Mr Berwin is triple fellowship trained. He spent a year at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), Stanmore, specialising in Young Adult Hip surgery as patients transition from adolescence to young adults. This includes managing patients with complex hip pathology such as hip dysplasia, Perthes disease and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Mr Berwin gained expertise in hip preservation techniques including hip arthroscopy.
He then spent a year at the prestigious Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital, Sydney, Australia, in which he gained a wealth of experience in routine and complex hip and knee arthroplasty for conditions such as osteoarthritis, Revision (re-do) arthroplasty and tumour work as the RPA was the state-wide referral centre for musculoskeletal tumours. He also gained accreditation to perform MAKO robotic and navigation assisted surgery.
After returning from Australia, Mr Berwin completed his final year of fellowship at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, focussing on complex hip arthroplasty including acetabular
reconstruction, revision surgery and the management periprosthetic fractures i.e. fractures around hip and knee replacements, as well as prosthetic joint infection (PJI) i.e. infection around hip and knee replacements. At Southmead he led a project to improve the safety and efficacy of single stage revisions for infected hip replacements.
Mr Berwin is currently the orthopaedic lead for Femur Fracture care at his NHS base hospital, the Royal United Hospital, Bath. He is passionate about ensuring safe and effective multi-disciplinary care for this complex cohort of patients.
Mr Berwin is widely published in the field of orthopaedics. He was the principal investigator of an NIHR portfolio project to investigate and improve recovery after surgery for hip fractures. He has also contributed book chapters on hip arthroplasty as well as a book on orthopaedic biomechanics. Mr Berwin has a post graduate diploma
from the British Society of Orthopaedic Oncology (BOOS), enabling him to provide the latest evidence base to aid decision making in complex tumour cases.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Berwin established a teaching partnership with a hospital in Northern Ethiopia, and is collaborating with Harvard Global Orthopaedics and the Ethiopian ministry of Health to improve trauma care systems in Ethiopia. Mr Berwin’s regular trauma and elective NHS practice is based at the Royal United Hospital, Bath. He is committed to delivering the best possible holistic care that is tailored the individual needs of his patients.
